"Make Ordinary Crossover" seems to be using TS spacing rather than MS spacing. When I swap the values for MS and TS the crossover aligns with double track. |

Andrew Barrowman wrote: "Make Ordinary Crossover" seems to be using TS spacing rather than MS spacing.Hi Andy, That's correct. The terms "Turnout Side" (TS) and "Main Side" (MS) refer to the template. By definition a crossover is on the turnout side of a turnout template: startup_pad.png The spacing settings are template-specific. The proper course of action is to set the desired spacing on the relevant side before using the tools > make functions. That's why the spacings dialog comes up when you use them. In practice it is most often the TS spacing which needs setting. The MS spacing applies only when making double-track for loops and sidings alongside running lines. Strictly speaking the MS spacing in the UK should default to 10ft-way for that purpose. i.e. in 4mm/ft scale that would be 60.67mm centres (182") instead of 44.67mm TS centres (134") for 6ft-way. However when I did that it caused much confusion because few modellers have space for the full spacings, or know about the prototype requirements. So by default MS and TS start off the same. Those who know what they are doing can then widen MS as needed for loops and sidings. The prototype allows 9ft-way instead of 10ft-way alongside running lines where space constraints make it unavoidable, for example between platforms or bridge parapets. (For those with space for 4-track main lines, the 10ft-way MS would also apply in the centre between the 2 pairs of lines each at 6ft-way. Or alternatively the centre pair are at 6ft-way, with 10ft-way to the slow lines each side.) cheers, Martin. |

Thanks Martin, But the terminology does seem a bit confusing. To me (at least) "main side" implies the distance between double-track "main lines". TS "Turnout Side" (to me) suggests a deviation from the main line, such as a loop or parallel siding. I'll invert everything and try again. Cheers! Andy |

Andrew Barrowman wrote: Thanks Martin,Hi Andy, Sorry about that, but it is explained in the notes: 2_290317_470000000.png I can't change it now, after 40 years. p.s. for half-diamond templates TS becomes DS (Diagonal Side), but the change is not reflected in all dialogs. cheers, Martin. |

Hi Martin, The only thing that's missing (and what threw me) is that TS (rather than MS) determines the distance between double tracks. Andy |

That's why there are separate entries for both in the tools menu. Perhaps I should change the menu wording from "make double track" to "make adjacent plain track"? That would require updating 3,942 notes, forum posts, screenshots and videos. It is always the words which drive me nuts. cheers, Martin. |

Hi Andy, I have updated the notes with more explanation and a diagram: 2_291617_180000000.png p.s. also since fixed "comjunction". I have also modified the wording on the menu slightly: 2_291617_180000001.png cheers, Martin. |
