Hi. I'm a newbie so I have a very basic question. What do the 5 dimensions in the info box for a piece of straight track control & what datum do they measure from? I had to set Y=-60mm to get a piece of strsight track to align it's inside rail on the X axis. Martin Hulse See attached |

Hi Martin, Welcome to Templot Club. Wow. That dialog is intended for experienced Templot users, and I suspect there are many of those who have never used it, or even seen it. To set a template at a specified position on the grid, use the peg and notch functions. First set the notch to the required position, and then shift the template onto it. I have made you a bit of scruff video showing how to do that (click the video to restart after each pause): http://flashbackconnect.com/Default.aspx?id=xIK0nwS0oj-fBbrCP4Jkew2 It is sometimes necessary to do that to get a track plan started. But after that most track plans can be created without much direct use of the notch, using the functions in the tools menu. (The keyboard shortcut for reset notch is CTRL+\ ,backslash, not as shown on the video.) p.s. if you put a rail along the grid axis, in order to print the whole template it will be necessary to move the page origin. Generally it is better to have the grid origin as the corner of the baseboard or railway room, and work entirely in the positive quadrant on the grid. A few of the basic peg positions: basic_peg_positions_1220x572.png BEGINNERS PLEASE IGNORE THIS To answer your specific question: What do the 5 dimensions in the info box for a piece of straight track control & what datum do they measure from? The shift and transform dimensions derive from the calculation datum, which you can see as a green dot on the Y-axis. You will rarely if ever need to know this, or use them. cheers, Martin. |

Hi All, Glad I'm not an experienced user, as I've never seen that dialog box and I've been using Templot for a few years now! The grey matter memory card can't remember how many. Cheers Phil |

I'm sure I must have a to-do list somewhere with it on. I wouldn't want to rush into it. Seriously, if anyone does want to know how those settings work, it's all in the open-source code for Templot3. You don't need to know for any normal use of Templot. cheers, Martin. |
