I have been given a plan of a point from a narrow gauge railway, how do convert it into a Templot template please. The measurement for the length is 12.251 to short rail (Meters) 4.345 to the CL intersect 7.906 from the intersect to the end the distance between the 2 centre lines at the end is .0873 and I think the degree is 6.3327 I thought I got to grip with crossing angles etc but this has just thrown me Can anyone help me please John |

Hi John, Can you scan the plan and attach it to a message here? We need a bit more information, for example the track gauge? The CL intersect on the centre-line corresponds to the "deflection point" DP in Templot which is peg position CTRL-3. However dimensions to and from it don't mean much without knowing to and from where. It's more helpful the know the gauge intersect FP in Templot at peg position CTRL-4 and the lead length to there from the points (blade tips). 6.3327 degrees is very close to a crossing angle of 1:9 1:9 RAM = 6.340 degrees 1:9 CLM = 6.360 degrees. However, the "6.3327 degree" may refer to "degree of curve", the American system for specifying radius. In which case it means a turnout radius of 905ft-2.6" The formula is: Radius in feet = 50 / sin(DegreeOfCurve/2) There is a conversion chart at: http://www.trainweb.org/freemoslo/Modules/Tips-and-Techniques/degrees_of_curve_to_radius.htm the distance between the 2 centre lines at the end is .0873That's 87.3mm ?? Did you mis-position the decimal point? regards, Martin. |

Hi John, Thanks for sending me the plan. I will write a few notes about it shortly. It seems to be one of those irritating drawings where the design is originally imperial but everything has been converted to odd metric sizes. Here are a few pictures of a turnout at Rhyd DDu taken in September 2006. This is modern heavy-rail narrow-gauge which bears little resemblance to the original NWNGR and WHR track of course. rhyd_ddu7.jpg rhyd_ddu6.jpg rhyd_ddu4.jpg rhyd_ddu5.jpg rhyd_ddu3.jpg rhyd_ddu2.jpg rhyd_ddu1.jpg regards, Martin. |
