I imagine no-one here is still using Internet Explorer, but you may want to pass this on to friends and family: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7784908.stm regards, Martin. |

Martin Wynne wrote: I imagine no-one here is still using Internet Explorer, but you may want to pass this on to friends and family:I have never thought of using anything other than Internet Explorer - simple inertia, I suppose. Apart from this highlighted security issue, would folk recommend that I should be using a different browser? What would be the other advantages? Noel |

Noel, It's not just this security issue but the numerous others that occurred before in this and previous versions. It seems at times that IE has more holes in it than Swiss Cheese! Personally, I use Firefox. In fact, most of the people I know use Firefox too. It has it's foibles from time to time but for normal browsing it works great. The additional ad-ons you can download to enhance it I find are particularly useful. Of course it's each to their own. Mac users have Safari for which there is a Windows version. Google have not long ago released a browser too so their are plenty of IE alternates out there. Chris |

And thanks to this our IT dept have enforced Protected Mode on IE - which makes lunch time surfing a real joy. For example, I don't get any of the editing buttons above and I can't actually post from IE without Javascript here, and the forums on dpreview are totally unseable. Not to mention the stuff we do have to access for work on remote sites, sigh ... ... and don't suggest installing another browser - oh the forms I'd have to fill out! Richard. |

I also use Firefox, basically because I've found it to be the best of the ones I've tried. As has been said, you can get various add-ons to customise it to suit the way you work. When I was able to monitor the browser usage of visitors to my website, something like 25-30% of visitors were using Firefox. I did try the Google browser, Chrome, and found it to be quite nice to use. Then I spotted how much crap it scattered all over the PC so spent a happy half hour removing all traces of it. I don't want a browser that I can't trust. Incidentally, this recent security problem is just another in a very long line, but for some reason this one has made the news - slow news day. If you actually look at what Windows Update is installing every month, security fixes for Internet Explorer feature very heavily and always have done. That isn't to say that other browsers don't have security flaws, but IE's get more media attention which effectively notifies the hackers that there is a new flaw so they go off and exploit it! |

That's why Richard is stuck in protected mode. regards, Martin. |

The real issue with IE is not so much that it is full of holes (although it is) but rather that every hacker in the world is actively trying to pull it to pieces (and succeeding). They take no interest in other browsers because "so few" people use them - especially in the corporate world. So I use Firefox. Unfortunately, some of the weaknesses in IE also occur in other browsers since they are actually "features" not bugs, but the fact that the hackers are looking elsewhere is a big help!. For the same reason, I also always use "last years model" of operating system - so I have only just upgraded one of my machines to XP (others are still on ME : spit)on the basis that the hackers are all too busy with Vista! But that is where my model falls apart - the latest version of Firefox crashes ME - and screws the machine up in the process! Best Regards, Howard. |

It's banned at my work. Something to do with software downloads. At least Rmweb isn't banned yet. The only problem is that every so often some good comes along which needs the latest OS. Richard PS I use Opera 9.62, but I prefer the older version 9.26. |

JFS wrote: snipped...But that is where my model falls apart - the latest version of Firefox crashes ME - and screws the machine up in the process!Howard. WIN ME is possibly the worst operating system ever to come out of MS. I had it on one machine for about a year and it crashed whenever it felt like it for no reason. I finally had had enough, formatted by drive and installed XP. So your model does not fall apart, the problem is ME sucks. Bruce Wilson Barrie, Ontario, Canada |

I am using Opera 9.62 and am quite happy with it. I have Firefox, but I am used to Opera and thus prefer it. I do have IE, but ony because some software requires it for updates &c. John |

Bruce, You are absolutely right about ME - it stinks. But I am running software on that machine (old Windows 2 pacakages) which are unusable on XP but do require USB so I am stuck with it. The good news is that hardware is so cheap now that I can leave that machine to run old stuff, never stick anything new on it and it stays completely stable! Until I upgraded it to a later version of Firefox and then it needed a rebuild.... regards, H |
