TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Not sure where I should post this.
I've had to rebuild my PC and I can't get the download link to work. Yesterday pressing the Download button got no response, today I get '404'
I managed load an old system image which contained an earlier version of Templot. It runs but does not update the programme to the latest version.
hopefully the problems are because of the work being done at the moment.

Hi Peter,

Yes, I'm sorry about that. I'm waiting for some DNS changes to propagate around the world, but it can take a day or two.

edit: should now be working again. Let me know if not.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Tony,

Welcome to Templot Club. :)

The download is working fine here (just tested again), and for 100s of other Templot users.

Are you downloading from the Templot web site, and not one of the dodgy sites which show up in Google? The download link is at:

https://85a.uk/templot/companion/installation.php

Do you have a 3rd-party antivirus program installed? Please switch it off while you install Templot.

In Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 you may see something like this:

2_210706_140000000.png

Click the More info link. You should then see something like this:

2_210706_140000001.png

Click the Run anyway button.

• If you use Norton anti-virus on your computer, before downloading please see:

cheers,

Martin.

@TonyMilforde

Hi Tony,

The download is an executable setup file, this one (try this direct link):

https://85a.uk/downloads/templot_231a_setup.exe

If it doesn't work for you, I'm sorry I don't have the faintest idea. If your system is objecting to it, there is usually a way to click past the block. Try right-clicking on the download file, and then Run as Administrator.

Sorry I don't have the resources to offer a Windows helpline service.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Tony

I have a similar problem but it will download. From memory, you have to click the "See more" button, then there's something like "Keep anyway". There seem to be two distinct stages where Windows complains - downloading and installing. A while ago I posted detailed screenshots of the process I have to go through (see my next post for the link). The "Unconfirmed 23473.crdownload" is Windows partial download that's being held waiting for you to tell it what to do.

If you're still stuck or we can't find my screenshots, I'll have another look. The difficulty with this on Windows 10 doesn't bode well for 11 though.

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks Paul.

What puzzles me is that I don't see any of that. My system is a fully updated Windows 10 system and it just works.

Possibly the difference is that I never use any other Microsoft software if I can help it. No Office or Edge stuff -- I use Firefox for everything.

Tony, try downloading using Firefox, and save the file in one of your own folders, not the folders Windows provides for the purpose -- I never use any of those. I have a MyStuff folder in the root C:/ drive, and every single thing goes in there.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin

I also have a fully updated Windows 10 system, and it just works! Unfortunately, “works” is Microsoft’s definition in that it’s doing what it’s designed to do, not what the user just wants it to do. I do have OneDrive and Office though, so maybe that’s the difference. My Win10 is the Home version, and is also the free upgrade from Windows 7. Maybe another relevant difference!

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,

What happens with the automated Templot updates? Do you still have to click through that stuff before the installer will run?

I'm going to release 232a as a full auto update later this evening, so please let me know. Thanks.

cheers,

Martin.

Gentlemen, thank you for your assistance. I manage to coax my computer load it properly by renaming the file extension manually to .exe
Now I just need to tun through a few refresher videos to start making some point templates
Thanks again

Ah, 232a is already there! If I let Templot do the update automatically, that all works fine. Pretending to be a new user, I downloaded it using Chrome with no problems whatsoever. Still pretending to be a new user, I downloaded it from Edge and all hell broke loose!!! At least, I had to go through the palaver I described earlier.

So, the automatic update is fine. Anyone installing for the first time should use not-Edge - I think that's what we can conclude!

Cheers,
Paul

@Paul Boyd

Many thanks Paul for taking the trouble to do that. :)

At least I now know why folks sometimes report problems which I never see. I have hardly ever used Edge. If I need an alternative to Firefox I occasionally use Opera.

I need to add something to the download page about the perils of Edge. I'm not sure what I can say without frightening folks.

But for now I'm too busy with the 3D stuff to get involved in any changes to the installer.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin

I'm glad it was useful for you. It was for me - I prefer to update manually so now I know to just use Chrome to download, but it's good news that despite Edge being my default browser, the automatic update works fine.

I'm not sure there is a way to not frighten folks! I definitely think it's worth mentioning on the download page though.

Cheers,
Paul
