  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Hi,

So I've seen some fascinating forum posts here regarding users and 3d printed GWR chairs, since I am planning to build a GWR BLT and hand build my trackwork using timber sleeper, C75 bullhead rails and preferably the correct sleepers. Is there somewhere I can acquire or inquire about these chairs?
I know of one stockist but from research these do not include the correct chairs for points etc. going off my reading, and some of the examples here I've seen are fantastic!
Thanks in advance!

@Hayfield

Hi,

Injection-moulded chairs in 4mm scale are available from C&L:

https://www.clfinescale.co.uk/online-store/Rail-Chairs-c32279004

There are some 2-bolt GWR ordinary chairs in the list, but as far as I know the switch sets are available only for REA chairs.

3D-printed chairs are available from various sources.

John (Hayfield) is the one to ask about all the chair types available. I have tagged him above.

Soon you will be able to 3D-print your own chairs direct from Templot, and you can already do so for plain track. However so far only for REA, it will be a while until I (or someone else) gets to do the GWR variants.

cheers,

Martin.

Its a very mixed basket for GWR chairs

in 4mm scale C&L do the largest range of injection moulded chairs, their new sprue contains 10 x standard chairs, 2 x J (joint) chairs, 2 x L1 (bridge chairs and 2 x functional H shaped fish plates. C&L also produce in EM & P4 gauges 2 bolt chaired and keyed flexitrack

Modelu sell 3D printed 2 bolt slide chairs

As for special chairs, where possible I use the special chairs, sometimes adapting them by cutting off the (3 bolt outers) outers substituting 2 bolt outers, Its a case of using and adapting what you can. If doing this its safer to use plastic timbers as plastic welds itself to plastic, using ply timbers runs the risk of chairs coming adrift especially when cleaning

7 mm its just standard and slide chairs that is available, which is a pity. Off the rails do a few nose chairs in 7mm scale via Shapeways

Thanks for the reply, actually building the layout in it's final track plan is way down the line, so I am just gathering all information I need, types of chairs for turnouts etc :)

Don't forget the Modelu slide chairs in 7mm scale along with the concrete blocks (Modelu do them in scales from 2mm scale upwards). Exactoscale also do bridge chairs (GWR ones are not too dissimilar) in both 4mm scale and 7mm scale along with running rail chairs. You do have to be a member of a society to purchase the Exactoscale ones, Scaleseven for 7mm and for 4mm scale either Scalefour or EMGS.
Fishplates - Functional ones - either C&L, Exactoscale or Permaway (7mm only), Cosmetic etched brass ones - 4mm scale various sources including, Brassmasters EMGS and others, whereas in 7mm scale -just me as far as I know.

4mm and the story behind the line is Era 2 but actual model Era 3.
From what I understand regardless the "Old Type" GWR templates in Templot are what I'm looking for since the other group were mostly adopted post 1930s construction. (unless I'm mistaken)

And yes, several of his books are on my buy list :) Thanks!
