TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Odd pagemap "problem".

Hi Martin,

I've just stumbled across a weird situation! I have two monitors but tend to use Templot on just the left-hand one. I printed off some sheets and noticed that OneDrive was syncing a file in PRINT-PAGEMAP-RECORD-FILES. Curiosity made me look to see what was in there, and all the very many PNGs looked something like this!

This is not exactly the biggest problem - I'm not even sure why it saves print maps - but thought you might like to know! Both monitors are the same-ish (Benq GL2450 and GL2460) with a resolution of 1920x1080.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Many thanks for reporting this bug. It's been there since version 093a released June 16th 2011, when I added the option to include sketchboard items in the printed output.

So that's only 12 years -- hardly anything in Templot time. :)

Templot makes a screenshot of the print preview screen every time you do any printing or PDF output. And saves it as page-map PNG image file in the \PAGEMAP-RECORD-FILES\ folders.

All template pages are marked with the date and time in the bottom left-hand corner, inside the trim margins:

A magnifying glass may be needed. (You can increase the size of this font, but it may then obscure part of the template.)

The idea is that if you get a pile of printed pages in a muddle, you can sort them into order using the date, and you can refer to the track plan they belong to by reference to the file date for the corresponding page-map image file. These menu items open the relevant folders:

The files will keep accumulating for ever, so it's a good idea to delete the very old ones from time to time.

There is also a button to print page-map on the print pages dialog:

page_map1.png

Which prints a paper page-map sheet in a different format. However it requires a massive effort of will to remember to click it -- which is why I added the automatic page-map screenshot records.

I will fix the bug in the next program update so that it records only the client area of the trackpad instead of the entire desktop monitor(s) area.

Thanks again for finding this.

cheers,

Martin.

p.s. Paul,

In your screenshot some parts of your background shapes are outside the printed page outlines. You can add the missing pages by inserting a short bit of dummy track template in each one. If necessary it can be so short it barely notices, e.g.0.5mm long.

I'm sure you know this, just mentioning it for others. :)

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Been out all day after a stupid o'clock alarm - the Black Country Living Museum, where a friend was today a mine tour guide!

I did know about the little bits of dummy track and make liberal use of them, although I like to tidy them away afterwards. The particular few pages I wanted this time didn't need them though.

But yes, it is a very useful tip for others.

I've now deleted all the print maps, but I understand their purpose now - thank you!

Incidentally, the ability to select individual pages that you added a while ago is incredibly useful, so thanks for doing that. I seem to remember it was something I was asking for at the time :)

Cheers,
Paul

I agree, a most useful facility.

Tony.
