I've been aware for several months that the donations fund is barely covering the web site costs. And like everything else they are going up.
What to do about it? There are several options:
1. revert to Templot being a paid-for product. That's out of the question -- I would rather stop Templot entirely than do that.
2. accept advertising sponsorship on Templot Club. That would compromise our independence and would probably involve me in extra admin work. It can also be annoyingly intrusive on the page.
3. find a cheaper hosting provider. That would likely mean losing some of the present facilities and reliability. It would also mean another massive site migration. I spent many hours on that 12 months ago and I'm not keen to do it again.
4. bang the drum more loudly. Some members have been extremely generous in the past, for which many thanks. Likewise some long-standing members originally paid for Templot and shouldn't be expected to pay again. I would rather try to spread the load more widely if possible. Which means:
5. some form of "little and often" supporter subscription. That would normally involve me in a lot of admin, but fortunately we now have the Patreon system to support content creators, and they do all the admin work.
I have therefore set up a Patreon page for Templot supporters with options to donate £3 or £5 per month to the Templot cause (or some other custom amount if you prefer). Click this button to visit the Patreon page and see those options:
If you would like to support Templot, you might like to click one of those options. For which many thanks indeed -- your first payment will be made on the 1st of the following month. You can end your subscription easily at any time -- or hopefully when I announce that the coffers are now overflowing.
It's important to make clear that this is a 100% voluntary donation -- i.e. you don't get anything in return (other than a warm glow), this is not a payment for anything. Which in theory means there shouldn't be any UK VAT added, despite the note on the Patreon page. I have ticked the box to indicate that this is purely a supporter donation. However Patreon being a USA company I doubt there is much I can do about it if they do add VAT.
If you would rather make a one-off donation, the Donate button for that is still working at the top of the page, many thanks.
