Martin,

Good afternoon, it's me yet again!

I've updated Templot to the latest version, and found your post on the forum to adopt 'plan B' way of getting scaled maps as background. That's the good news and where the 'it's obviously me again' start!

Thought I'd have a go at seeing how Plymouth Devonport would sit in 2mm and following instructions copied URL from NLS link as follows;

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zo...6832&layers=10&b=4&marker=50.373890,-4.167087
Adding marker right in centre of station, I loaded a 14 tile map. Imagine my surprise when the map loaded predates the arrival of the railway! Just to be sure, I've tried a few times and result is the same (opting for 2nd 25" series results in error!). In the past you could use a specific map that NLS might have, but am I right in thinking this option has disappeared with the move to georeferenced maps, which then begs the question whether selection of location is now a game of Russian Roulette!? If not, do you have any inkling what might have happened, or more likely what I've done wrong again!?

Look forward to your thoughts at some point.

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Paul,

It turns out that NLS have two sets of 25" tiles for Devon. I haven't included the second set in 227c, but I will do now that I know about it.

In the meantime you need to revert to using the screenshot maps instead. Paste the URL into the bottom box:

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=19&lat=50.37429&lon=-4.16540&layers=168&b=4

You will now need to click to accept cookies on the map when it appears.

The previous "Find by place" (now "Map Finder") sheets for different dates are still available from NLS but no longer work in the Windows embedded browser since NLS changed their web site. To use them in Templot now, first get the georeferenced version as above. Then make a screenshot manually of the sheet you require, add it as a picture shape, set it as transparent, and use the georeferenced version as a guide to scale it to size. Then delete the georeferenced version and switch the transparency off.

I will make some videos of all that, or maybe do a live demo session, once I've got my breath back from getting 227 released.

cheers,

Martin.

Martin,

I'm glad it wasn't me, I think! Quite why NLS have two sets for Devon beats me, but life is never simple. Of course, you could always use the existing set as a form of "Railroad Tycoon" and let people build their own railways across Devon, think of the fun one could have!

I'll see how I get on using the screenshot method and if I get unstuck will await your recovered breath and inclusion of the second set of maps in time.

Cheers,

Paul

Hi Paul,

The NLS now have 2 sets of georeferenced historic 25" tiles for the counties of Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

The earlier coloured maps generally date from the 1880s. The later uncoloured maps are generally from the 1900s. There is a 3rd set for Gloucestershire from the 1920s.

I have now added options to choose between them in the list when loading the 25" County Series tiled maps:

This will be in the next program update 227e. Thanks again for reporting it.

The NLS web site is constantly expanding, it is difficult to keep up in Templot. :)

Bear in mind that the above tiled maps apply to the NLS "Georeferenced" map series. The NLS have many other historic maps, scales and dates in their "Map Finder" section.

Martin,

Many thanks for the update, I used your original view of the screenshot map and found it was a near perfect fit to scale compared to the georeferenced sheet.

Haven't had much time to dabble further as I'm now building a shed to house (finally) my own railway sometime - sunbegan melting tarmac again before I could complete the base, so base will be done tomorrow!

Cheers,

Paul
