TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

As I have been waiting for the FinetraX kits to come out I thought I'd get my order in early, but it would not accept my order, so I sent them the message below. I hope this is not going to be a constant problem.

Hi Graham

That kind of error message can be seen if you’re behind a proxy. Many fraudsters do that and more online ordering sites are therefore checking for that. The other question is do you really mean you’ve had the same IP address for over 20 years? That would be incredibly unusual, not to mention expensive! The overwhelming majority of home broadband users are on a dynamic IP address, which is a bit of a pain for people like me who then need to use a third party DDNS service to access my PC remotely!

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,
I changed to Zen Broadband and Internet some years ago.
Ok, it's not the cheapest but I get a sequence of 8 static IP adresses, 6 of which I can use for anything I want.
Their customer service is second to none and I'm on fibre to cabinet with excellent (unlimited) download and upload speeds.
I had a Demon email address for 25 years before that until Vodafone pulled the plug.
Regards
Charles

Hi Charles,

I agree about Zen customer service. Proves it can be done -- other companies take note. :)

Martin.

Hi Paul,
I may be confused about the IP address, I have always been a .com for that time but have been with NetNerd and their previous identities for a good many years. Also a satisfied customer.

Martin.

Quite a few years ago when I used Virgin internet (via BT telephone line) there was a fault on the line which took Openwork/BT ages to even look at let alone try and fix. A BT help desk told me whilst helping to fix the telephone part, had I been with BT the internet would have been looked into immediately. Eventually Virgin gave up and transferred me to cable

When we moved sadly Virgin did not cover the area, with trepidation I went with BT. According to my son in Law I have extremely fast broadband and the service I receive has been first class. They do have UK service centres, the phone is always answered quickly and any issues instantly resolved, something many other companies could follow

Ah, good, this is now a separate topic! I wanted to reply but didn't want to further clutter the FiNetrax thread.

I agree about Zen's customer service, and I can't now remember why I changed back from them to PlusNet (who also have good customer service in my experience). With Zen, the standout thing for me was a house move from Somerset to Leicestershire in 2009. I had working broadband until the last day in Weston, and by the end of the first day in Mountsorrel I also had working broadband. That was pretty good, I thought.

@Charles Orr I'm intrigued by the static IP addresses you're getting with Zen and might have to investigate further. Currently I'm paying $25 a year to NoIP for a DDNS service because I don't have a static IP. If my PC was left on permanently I wouldn't need any of that for remote access, but I do need it to turn my PC on remotely in the first place!

And Demon internet - gosh! They were my first internet provider, in the days when I had to use my mobile phone as a GSM modem and got speeds of as much as 1K on a good day. Just about tolerable for email but not much else - not that there was much else back then!

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,
My Zen account is not a business one.
Of the block of 8 I can actually use 5 not 6 as I previously stated.
The remaining 3 are reserved as
1 Network Address
2 Broadcast Address
3 Router Address

The router address does allow me to use port forwarding though.
I use a Draytek Router and a TP Link Deco S4 mesh Wifi system (3 units) which covers the whole of my property including the garden.

I got my Demon Internet and Email address in 1994 and used a dial up modem and a Compuserve account.
Demon was accquired by Scottish Power and then Vodafone.

Best regards
Charles
