TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Can Templot produce very large radius curves?

I noted reference in the beginners' guides to being able to customise track curvature, but I can't find how to do it. The double-track prototype for my model has a 73-chain radius inside curve, which I wish to replicate in 4mm/ft. Yes, I know it's almost straight, but can it be done?

Hi Brian,

Of course -- click this menu item:

or click the figure showing in blue when using the F6 curving mouse action:

You can set any radius you like up to 1.0E8 mm max, positive or negative.

1.0E8 is 100,000,000 mm, or about 62 miles radius! :)

At 4mm/ft scale, that's a radius of about 5000 miles on the prototype!

All templates in Templot are curved -- straight templates are curved at 1.0E8 mm radius, which is why you can't go above that.

cheers,

Martin.

Got it, thanks very much Martin, that's absolutely brilliant. I may have more questions, but I think I'm going to enjoy this!

Hey Brain.
Welcome to your new addiction, yes its fun.

To make a dead strait piece of track you can type / instead of a lot of zero's in the F6 curve menu Martin pointed out.

Hi Igor and Paul

Thanks for your comments. After many failed attempts while I was beginning to understand how Templot works, I have succeeded in producing a length of double track at 48mm centres on a 73 chain centre-line radius curve, incorporating a trailing C9 crossover. 73 chains is 4,818ft, which is 19,272mm in 00 scale, so that's the figure I used to set the radius (I hope that's correct). I'm now feeling pretty pleased with myself!

Regards
Brian

Hi Igor,

For straight track you can also click:

Brain,
When you have you desired curve you can go to "double track TS"
Its on 3/4 on the right of the top of your screen.

If you click on that a menu will pop up and ask you if you want to stay in model mm.
If you click on that one you can add your needed center to center distance.
I discovered from some drawings that they are not entirely correct.
Enkhuizen station 1920 and Amsterdam CS in the Netherlands.
The measuring technics they had back than where not adequate enough.
If i may suggest look for google pictures of your project and try to figure out what is still there and dig some deeper.
There is always a unsuspected bonus around one or two corners.

Good luck in your endevours, keep us posted please.

With best regards Igor
