TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Hi Martin
Is the facility for downloading 25 inch OS maps currently available? I'm able to access and print out the georeferenced plan I need direct from the NLS website, but not via Templot. The map screen remains blank and after pressing 'yes' 5 or 6 times when asked, the screen remains blank.
Regards
Brian

Hi Brian,

The georeferenced maps are working fine here (Windows10). I haven't received any other report of problems. Here's a reminder of the process:

get_nls_map.png

Copy the URL from the address bar in your browser after finding the NLS map you want.

The NLS web site is a constantly moving feast. They have recently renamed the "Find by Place" individual sheets as "Map Finder" and seemingly changed the zoom levels in the URLs, so there is more work there for me to sort that out. :)

But the georeferenced maps are working fine. To try it, you could use this link for Bodmin:

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=19&lat=50.46556&lon=-4.71589&layers=168&b=1

Your copied URL should look like that.

Which version of Windows are you using?

What is the question you are answering 'yes' to?

What is your model scale?

What is the NLS link for the map you want?

If still no joy I will get it for you and post the BGS3 file here.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin

The problem, I believe, is my superannuated computer, which is still running on WindowsXP (don't laugh). Just arrived, and sitting in a box by my desk, is a brand new computer, loaded with Windows10, which should hopefully solve the problem once I've got it set up (which may take some time as I'm hopeless with IT). I say this after following your instructions to the letter and still ending up with a blank map screen (I went off to make a cup of tea in case it was loading slowly, but no joy after 15 minutes). My model scale is 16.5mm 00-BF.

I shall report back in due course!

Thanks and regards
Brian

Hi Brian,

It should work in XP, but it depends on any settings you may have changed in Internet Explorer.

If the map is blank, try clicking on it, and then pressing the arrow keys on the keyboard.

Sometimes the security settings won't load files from the internet without some activity from the user, such as clicking the screen or pressing a key.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin

As I said, I'm pretty hopeless with IT, but I've tried a few things and now believe the problem is indeed related to my Internet Explorer settings. I'll have to leave it until I get the new PC working, which I'm sure will solve the problem.

Thanks and regards

Brian

Hi Brian,

If you can't get the embedded browser to work, you may be able to get a screenshot from your regular browser, and scale it to match your model.

I have posted the basics here. I'm hoping someone will write it up in more detail as I'm very tired tonight:

https://85a.uk/templot/club/index.php?threads/calculating-map-size.135/

To make a screenshot, press the Print Screen key on the keyboard (near top right). It doesn't print anything, it copies the screen. The name on the key is a legacy from the olden days. You can then paste the screen image into a background picture shape.

cheers,

Martin.
