  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Exporting PDFs in A3 Page Size

Martin et all,
Can somebody point me in the right direction? I have a track diagram in Templot that I want to export as an A3 PDF so my local print shop can run it off a couple of copies for me, which can then be cut up and put on the baseboards. Im sure I've exported in A3 size before, but cannot find anyway of changing the PDF options - most likely me, not Templot at fault!

Can anyone point me as to how to do it?

Hi Rich,

Change these dimensions to whatever you want for your paper size. Allow some space for the trim margins. output > export a file... menu item:

If you are using a print shop rather than your own printer, they are probably printing from roll paper. In which case there is no need to be restricted to A3 pages, you can have it printed all in one piece. Set the long side to the length of your baseboard, and the short side to the width of their roll paper (ask them), and untick the size between trim margins tickbox.

n.b. whatever you do, tell the print shop 3 times that you want it printed 100% actual size, no scaling. This is not the default setting, so they will likely need to change it.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin,
Ah thank you - I did see that but could not establish how 260mm x 180mm gave A4 size, so concluded it must be another aspect!! My problem is i tend to cover think things!

I'll ask the print shop about printing on a roll, but if it has to be A3, can just put in 420mm x 297mm or does any allowance have to be made for overlapping pages/non-printable margins etc?

Your comment about telling them 100% actual size, no scaling is noted!

Hi Rich,

If you put the full A3 paper size 420mm x 297mm you need to untick the size between trim margins tickbox, so that Templot knows it is the full paper size.

Otherwise Templot assumes the dimensions you enter are the final trimmed size inside the trim margins, smaller than the actual paper size. Most users prefer to do it that way so that the trimmed sizes are a convenient match to the grid squares. This makes it easier if you need to do a reprint of one page at a later date. You can change the grid spacings at output > output grid options > menu item.

You can check the results by opening the PDF in your PDF reader program.

(260x180mm is Templot's default 13x9 aspect ratio, sized to fit on both A4 and US Letter paper sizes, leaving space for the trim margins.)

cheers,

Martin.
