TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Extracting a 3D timbering brick from a track plan

Quick reply >
@Hayfield

Hi John,

If you are using the printer profile for the Kingroon which I posted, ironing is turned on already. It makes a smoother top surface on the timbers (but increases the print time). They still benefit from a light wet sanding with a 400-grit sanding block, followed by a scrub with a nail brush.

You have got me confused (easily done). I thought you were trying 7mm scale now, but you have posted a BOX file for an EM crossover?

cheers,

Martin.
Martin

I am multi tasking very badly. The 7mm turnout has printed out very well in 3 bricks, if a little thick. Version 2 will be learning how to print thinner track bases and do something different with the tiebar restraints

As for 4mm bricks, bit of a long story but helping out a fellow modeler who initially asked if I could build 3 turnouts for him, then chatted about Templot plug track and said I would be willing to print the turnouts and chairs for him, if all OK and happy he could replace the materials I use. I thought it would be a much better project for me to learn 3D printing. I don't mind wasting materials as I learn how to get to grips with the system and at least the good prints will be put to good use.

As it happens, Paul lived in Galleywood as does my daughters farther in law and they were very good friends (small world)

I have been out all day so will try and take on board what you have written tomorrow

Hi John,
before printing brick 2 (orange) , delete PR129 (orange) as it overlaps your brick 3 (purple) by duplicating PR138 (purple) and in fact PR139 (purple).
Here I have opened the Box and then clicked on Show box list then scrolled and selected PR129 (orange), which has then highlighted that template on the trackpad in white
View attachment 9043
which shows that it should not be part of your orange (or puce) brick

Steve

Steve thank you very much, been out all day so will look at what you have written and I think I will restart afresh with the bricks after absorbing yours and Martins advice

Steve/Martin

Following on from these previous threads hopefully I seem to have found out where I have been going wrong plus also learning what I can and cannot do

This was the final test print of brick 2 which I ended early owing to the two right hand timbers being out of alignment

As Steve said too many duplicate partial templates, but also quite a lot of mistakes set in when altering partial templates (too many duplicated partial templates) and my way of doing things causing conflicts.

Still I started to understand how altering templates can affect other templates. (School boy errors) But I am getting there.

I now have brick 2 printing and brick 3 waiting to be printed, now to make brick 4 which is the last complicated (for me) brick
