  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

I'm currently watching the live tracker page for the GBDURO endurance off-road cycling challenge. It's a self-sufficiency bike-packing challenge race from Land's End to John O' Groats along mostly green lanes and farm tracks. And the sides of mountains. Usually taking 9 or 10 days.

They started from Land's End at 8.00 am this morning, and some riders have been moving continuously for over 13 hours now. One of them being the son of a good friend of mine:

https://www.followmychallenge.com/live/gbduro21/?Ollie Hayward

(rider OH on the map)

As I write they are following a bridle path across the top of Exmoor in the dark.

More info: https://www.theracingcollective.com/gbduro.html

It's all making me feel very tired. :(

Martin.

Very pleased to report Ollie came in 3rd at the end of stage 1, from a field of 45 riders. After riding all through Sunday night and an amazing chase across the Brecon Beacons in the dark. Stage 2 starts at 8.00am Tuesday and they do it all again. Mid-Wales to Northumberland.

Martin,
That looks like seriously hard work. Good luck to Ollie.

After 9 days of amazing thrills and spills, Ollie reached John O' Groats at 3am this morning as the winner of the 4th stage of the race after the leading rider was disqualified. At the end there were 15 riders left in the race, from a starting field of 45 riders from Land's End.

Ollie's aggregate time for the 4 stages makes him 2nd overall in the event.

To put that in perspective, the event winner Mark Beaumont is a celebrity endurance cyclist who holds the world record for cycling round the world: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Beaumont_(cyclist)

Congratulations Ollie!

Here's an interview with Ollie about GBDuro, on the web site of the makers of his bike:

Well done to them. In the mid 90s I was going to do this journey (though from JOG to LE) by bike, but then events overtook and all the training was wasted. Too old now.

It's unusual to see people going LE to JOG though. Most do it the other way. (incidentally, you'd be surprised how many people believe you when you tell them that it's because it's downhill going from Scotland to Cornwall...)

p.s.

This is the "dot watcher" newsblog site following the race for biking enthusiasts:

https://dotwatcher.cc/race/dales-divide-2022

This is Ollie's own tracker page -- last reported out in the Clee hills this morning testing his bike and kit:

https://trackleaders.com/dalesdivide22i.php?name=Ollie_Hayward

The rider to watch is Angus Young -- he was miles in front for most of GBDURO last year -- until disqualified for borrowing a fresh bike from a bystander. I doubt he will make that mistake again.

To finish the race riders must ride onto the pier at Arnside and touch the flagpole at the far end.

There is a live webcam viewing Arnside pier, at:

https://www.camsecure.co.uk/webcam/arnside/arnside.html

Also showing trains on the Kent Viaduct to Grange-over-Sands.

The first finishers are expected to arrive on the pier this evening.

Ollie (OH) has teamed up with friend Matthew Garthwaite (MG) to ride as a pair. They rode through the night, and have been holding 4th and 5th place (out of a field of 96) -- some way behind the 3 leaders but well ahead of the main pack.

The results are going to be difficult to read. There is a shortcut option in the route for those taking part just for fun, cutting out the eastern section through Scarborough and over the North York Moors. Several of them will be rejoining the main route shortly, ahead of the main pack doing the full route.

Unfortunately the tracking software seems unable to cope with this, showing those who have taken the shortcut now among the leaders, and quoting times for them at checkpoints they didn't visit.

The Raceflow graph shows what's happening and which riders have taken the shortcut:

https://trackleaders.com/dalesdivide22f.php#maintabs-4

(click the Refresh button to see anything)

edit: Congratulations to Ollie and Matthew who finished 4th-equal (out of a starting field of 96 riders). :)

2 hours in and Oliver is near the front of the pack (in a field of 174 riders): :)

It is difficult to see the actual leader at any given time because of delays in their trackers firing. Mentally extend the coloured lines to a vertical timeline. Zoom in on the RACE FLOW chart to see it better:

(tick the refresh every 60 seconds box)
