TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

I wish it would, and I wish it wouldn't

I doubt any of these are "biggies", but would make my life easier:

I wish it would:
  • Save the max explode (zoom-in) in user preferences
  • Save "show data pre-selected" in user preferences
I wish it wouldn't:
  • Truncate the project title when using for the filename
  • Strip hyphens from the project title when using for the filename
  • When the (excellent) find intersection fails to find an intersection could it not close the dialog box - because for me, 9 times out of 10 I've picked the wrong rails to find the intersection, and in the evening I've got the memory of a gold fish, and keep forgetting which combination I've already tried.

Thanks Richard, I will try to make all those changes in the next update.

Leaving hyphens in the file names might be an issue for some operating systems and web servers. The rules for file names to be universally usable are:

a-z lower case only
0-9
underscores

and nothing else.

However it seems that nowadays hardly anyone sticks to the rules, or even knows they exist, so I will see what I can do.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Richard,

Version 229c is now on the server, with all those changes, and a fix for the shapes sync. :)

https://85a.uk/templot/club/index.php?threads/templot2-update-version-229c-now-available.303/

A few points:

I have reduced the default max explode from 10mm to 6mm.

The project title is now truncated at 50 characters in file names (previously it was 20). I have an inkling that may cause problems further down the line, but I can't remember what exactly, so we will wait and see.

The default project title is now "Market Square". It's had several names over the years, most recently "Midland Central".

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin

I've updated, but not tried it yet - work's getting in the way.

I'll let you know how I get one.

Thanks again.

PS: Tiled Maps + improve map clarity = Brilliant!
(although I still like the bright night colour scheme, so inverting the images is fine for me)

Hi

Thanks - I tried all my wish it would/wouldn't yesterday, and they all seem ok. I do have another one to do with the DXF export. I've thought this for sometime, but now there are more layers, it would make my life easier.

It would be nice if there were layer states. Where the state/settings (colour/line style/anything else?) of all of the layers could be saved, so it would be easy to recall these states. There could be some predefined ones (all 2D/all 3D/all/common 2D/common 3D/none), and users would be able to save some states of their own, either to files, or in user preferences.

When I was designing chairs (and something I'll need to go back to, now I don't have access to Autodesk Inventor, and will have to use Fusion 360 instead), I found it useful to have both the running edges of the rails (and all the other layers I use) and the centre line of the rails, so that's two separate exports, one for all the layers; change the generator settings, rebuild; then export just the rails - which because of the generator settings, means I just get the centre-lines. And it's a minor faff to go through setting all the other layers to off. The new Omit All button would go someway to help with this - I just think "layer states" might be a useful addition. I'm sure there would be other uses for it.

I know you're working in this area, so perhaps it's something you can fit in?

Thanks

Richard

Hi Richard,

Thanks for that. I have already established a mechanism to save and reload custom DXF data:

dxf_custom_data.png

So far it saves only the custom rail section, but I'm intending it to contain all the DXF dialog settings eventually. At present it is using the CRX file extension, but I have since discovered that is used for Chrome browser extensions, so to avoid any mix-ups I shall be changing it to SK4 (and SK2 for the custom chair details, when I get that far).

cheers,

Martin.
