TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

It seems Delphi was a good choice for Templot

Interesting blog post from Embarcadero:

Obviously pushing Delphi, but it includes:

"Delphi programs are extremely stable – they run, in some cases for many years without needing to be restarted and that ease of distribution and the fact it doesn’t need any operating system dependencies means even an older Delphi program written for something like Windows XP will still work absolutely normally in today’s vastly different Windows 11 operating system with no changes at all."

They don't mention one written in Delphi5 originally for Windows98, but here we are. :)

Admittedly I haven't so far received news of Templot running ok on Windows 11. Anyone?

Martin.

That’s good news for Templot!

Much as I’m curious about Windows 11, according to the Microsoft compatibility checks, neither my home nor work PCs can run Windows 11, despite both being only about 8 years old and still perfectly adequate for everything else! Well, Lightroom can be a bit sluggish at times…

Cheers,
Paul

Martin,

The application I wrote to work with my digital sound editing business started in the early 90s using Delphi V1 from a cover disk off the front of Personal Computer World, and it was probably running on Win 3.1. :) The same basic app ran until 2010 through all the versions of Windows up to Vista, and no need for Microsoft Redistributables of about 10meg to go with a 250Kb app. :)

I would have to dig out one of my old PCs to copy the app onto my present Win 10 machines to check that it still works. I'm not running Win 11 as yet so can't try it on them.

Jim.

I've just ran into that problem recently when I got a refurbished heavy end laptop to run 3D CAD programs. It was about four years old with a top end Intel I7 processor in it and was reported as unsuitable for Win 11 with the suitability test. I did a bit of digging around on the 'Net and found that a lot of people with modern high end machines for gaming and CAD are in the same boat. I did find a hint that Microsoft might review the situation but I haven't found the reason for Win 11 being unsuitable for modern high performance PCs.

Apparently something to do with something called TPM, apparently it can be bypassed but why did they bother?

TPM is one factor, but apparently a 4.2GHz quad core processor is also insufficient on my home PC. Just how much processing power does Win 11 need? My work PC (3.2GHz, quad core, with just 8Gb of RAM) has today been quite happily simultaneously running 3D CAD (Creo Parametric), PCB design software (Altium Designer), Word, Outlook, Teams and a whole host of background tasks. If it can do all that but still isn’t good enough for Win11, there’s something seriously wrong with Win 11!

Who knows, I am still using 7 and have no reason to change at the moment

Thanks Ian, good to know.

If you find any oddities please post a screenshot, I may be able to fix it.

Thanks,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

I've not come across any issues so far with Templot on Win11, but I will be reverting to Win10 as there are certain aspects of how Win11 looks and operates that I don't like.

Ian
