TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Map download problem

Hello Martin
I'm not sure if this is a flaw or just something has changed. I've been trying to download background maps from NLS, as I have many times before with great success. I have just downloaded the latest version of Templot and it appears the whole interface has changed (I have searched for reference to this, but without success though I do recall something about geo-maps Vs tiles).

The system for downloading tiles is really great- to simply add another row/ column is incredible. However, I've selected what I think is called a 'geo' map and I've fed that URL into the interface and yet it won't give me the map I want; looking at the map it's giving me I'd date it pre ww1, whereas the one I've selected is 1944-72. I've tried all combinations of the buttons on the interface.

Is this a bug somewhere or am I doing something wrong? I have a horrible feeling that this has been discussed a little while back but I can't find anything on it now.

TIA
Derek

PS the url https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=18.0&lat=51.53411&lon=-0.12298&layers=170&b=1

@Derek

Hi Derek,

It's working fine for me. It's a 50-inch map. Did you select the 50-inch option on the dialog:

A good way to date the tiles is to look for the OS grid lines:

kx_map4.png

The OS Grid was invented in 1936, so the grid lines won't be shown on earlier maps.

The grid lines are likely to be angled on the screen and slightly curved after georeferencing.

The original August 1952 50" sheet (1:1250) from which the tiles were georeferenced:

cheers,

Martin.

@Martin Wynne thank you. I did try all those options, but by that point perhaps I'd done something to the thingy and the oojimaflip was out of align with the whatyoucallit.

As ever you are generous with your time and are a Gent. I've continued to make good use of Templot and I'll remember to contribute to the forum costs when it comes to next pay day.

Derek

Jumping on this thread - I wonder if anyone can help - I suspect that I am doing something silly.

I want to download a map and have watched the excellent video.

But when I click through to the NLS maps I get something slightly different to the video.

I get this blank page:

As opposed to a page that looks like this with a left hand navigation window

i enter the mapping function through this window that I think is correct. Clicking the NLS blue button.

Anyone have any ideas? Thank you in advance and sorry if I am doing something stupid.

@Michael Woods

Hi Michael,

You are not doing anything wrong.

NLS have changed their web site and the link in Templot is now out-of-date. Sorry about that, I will correct it in the next program update (although it is very likely the NLS will change again, like Templot it is a constant work-in-progress).

In the meantime, click this link to get started, and then you should be able to follow the video:

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15&lat=51.9996&lon=-0.9989&layers=10

Thanks for reporting the problem.

The video is at:

cheers,

Martin.
