  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

My first turnout

Quick reply >
Hi Martin,

It's been a while since you last heard from me but here is my first go at making a turnout, with your help of course. Just need to add the tie bar now. Any observations are most welcome. I think the mainline double junction is next! :)

Best regards

Roger

Hello Roger
Looks pretty good to me. What scale and gauge is it? As a matter of interest, where is the electrical break on the switches. I ask because it doesn't look as if you've gapped the closure rails in the usual place near the crossing?

Kind regards
Andrew

Hello Andrew,
Thanks for your message, it's good to hear from you. Its 10mm scale and Gauge One. It's predominately for live steam locomotives usually meths or coal fired, so no electrics to worry about. Any electric locomotives are battery powered and radio controlled. I should add its a garden railway with a shed/station for the locos and stock to run into. I've used this as an opportunity to learn about making turnouts before progressing on to more adventurous track formations.

I've been following your railway build on Templot, very impressive, well done.

Kind regards
Roger
