TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

The old page of related web links had gone missing from the Companion in the move from the old server.

I have reinstated it, but I haven't gone through and tested all the links -- some will be broken:

https://85a.uk/templot/companion/websites_links.php

If you find something not working, please let me know. Even better if you can provide an up-to-date link. Thanks.

What's missing?

Most of these links are old http links. In many cases they can now be replaced with more secure https, but going through them all and finding which can and which can't, and which auto-redirect, is a long job. Again any help appreciated.

cheers,

Martin.

Unfortunately Just Tracks and Raymond Walley are no longer with us. Colin Craig is no longer supplying parts etc. You might want to add my entry to section 3 as I do supply etched fishplates in 7mm scale.

@Stephen Freeman

Thanks Stephen.

I did know that Norman Saunders and Raymond Walley had died, I will update the list. There was a lot of useful info on Raymond's web site, and most of it is now available on the Gauge O Guild's wiki pages:

https://www.gaugeoguild.com/GOGwiki/doku.php?id=authors:raymondwalley

(probably needs a member login)

but of course that's not a track-building service.

I believe some of Colin Craig's components are now available from someone else?

cheers,

Martin.

From Colins Website:
"Welcome to my website for finescale 4mm/ft model railway items.
I have now ceased supplying all model railway components following changes to my personal situation.
The detailing and bogie components are now being handled by Phil Eames at Stenson Models

http://www.stensonmodels.co.uk/

I am looking to pass on my track projects but have so far been unsuccessful.
The situation has been worsened since the suitable code 82 rail has been discontinued by Peco and P4 track Co. "

With regard to Code 82 rail, this is obtainable from Karlgarin, however it is aimed at 7mm scale Narrow Gauge and consequently has a wider foot, approx 2mm, I hesitate to try to be more accurate as I doubt the accuracy of my calipers, in any event it won't fit Peco Pandrols, I know I tried.

@Stephen Freeman

Thanks Stephen.

Foot width for FB-109, BS-110A, BS-113A rails is all 5.1/2" which scales to 1.83mm in 4mm scale, so 2mm is not too far out.

The problem with existing supplies of Code 82/83 is not the height (code number) but the head width. Do you know the head width of the Karlgarin rail?

cheers,

Martin.

The foot is fractionally too wide for the Pandrols, Head width is 1.10 mm approx. However I have found that it can be persuaded to accept the pandrols, though the base of the chairs does bend a bit. Perhaps with the application of Butanone when fixing to sleepers will help to flatten it a bit.
A quick test piece to show that it is actually possible. Incidentally I forgot to mention that all Karlgarin rail is HiNi, though apart from Bullhead, I think you might need to order it direct from Richard rather than Phoenix Precision Paints, though am not certain on that. I
code82.jpg
f you want to order any rail of that make under one metre in length I think you have to.

C&L still sell code 82 flatbottom rail it fits Peco Pandrol clips far better than the EMGS code 83, which I have also managed to make fit Peco Pandrol clips
Please read Martin's previous post, the main issue with C&L and Peco is the rail head width. If I remember correctly the C&L version used to be even narrower than Peco and looked distinctly odd. I hope that the current version is somewhat better.
