TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Peco 00/H0 template library

Quick reply >
Hi Martin,
I'm looking to use Peco HO/OO code 75 turnouts in my large fiddle yard and behind the scenes etc. I was wondering whether any templot templates exist already?
I have managed to locate and download large straight bullhead turnouts and within topic 294 for the large & small OO turnouts but, I cannot find any curved turnouts, medium turnouts, slips or 3 way turnouts. I dont want to generate these from scratch if they already exist. Terry

Hi Terry,

Sample Peco 00/H0 templates can be downloaded from this very old topic:

https://85a.uk/templot/archive/topics/topic_294.php

Those templates are with the silly FB timbering. But the rail footprint is the same for the bullhead range. Only the rail footprint is relevant if you want to use the Peco templates in track planning, so you may as well switch the timbering off. I can't imagine anyone actually wanting to hand-build a turnout matching the Peco FB range timbering.

The core template defining the Peco geometry is the Small Radius turnout. From that you can easily create all the other items in the range. For example starting from one of those you can easily make a Long Crossing: tools > make diamond-crossing menu item, or a Double Slip: tools > make slip > make double-slip menu item:

To convert a Small Radius to a usable footprint for a Medium Radius turnout, go to geometry > template lengths (in mm)... menu item and enter:

approach length = 34mm
overall length = 219 mm

More about that in this old topic: https://85a.uk/templot/archive/topics/topic_460.php

For the Curved Turnout, start with the Large Radius turnout and curve it (F6 mouse action) until a trial printout matches the actual turnout. I don't have one to try, and I doubt the dimensions quoted by Peco will make much sense.

An alternative way of track planning with Peco 00/H0 track is to use the Peco library in XtrackCAD (free). You can export a DXF file from XtrackCAD (unlike AnyRail), which you can import into the Templot background shapes:

cheers,

Martin.
