Hello,
Does anybody on here have any experience with an American glue called pliobond. It is often used over there for glueing flatbottom rail to timbers ie sleepers ) and is a contact adhesive usually applied to both rail and timber. It is then left to become dry before being pressed together in a similar way to contact type adhesive familiar to UK users. The thing with Pliobond is that the makers ( Ashland ) quotes this in their data sheet :
"The solvent used in PLIOBOND is methyl ethyl
ketone. This solvent can be used for thinning
when necessary. or for cleaning PLIOBOND off
work tools. If methyl ethyl ketone is unavailable,
ethyl acetate can be used."
This makes an alternate laying method possible in that you apply the adhesive to just the bottom of the rail and when dried place the rail in position on the timbers. Once the rails are adjusted using track gauges lightly brushing MEK onto the joints then softens the adhesive and enables the bond to be made with the timbers. Once the MEK evaporates you have a good bond and can spike the rails cosmetically.
I can order Pliobond from Fasttracks but the question is do other makes of 'contact' adhesive behave in a similar way ? I have a vague recollection of asking something similar a while back but it doesn't appear to be on here.
