  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Problem with altering track spacings.

Hello Martin.
I have been trying to alter the basic timbering alignment of a crossover by adjusting the track spacing as I have done many times in the past, but on this occasion this did not work as expected.
On further investigation I discovered the following.
If I alter the track spacing to 45mm (P4 gauge) and create adjacent tracks, all is well.
However if I change the track spacing to 45.1mm and create adjacent tracks the end result has changed back to 45.0mm.
Even stranger, if I alter the track spacing to 45.2mm and create adjacent tracks the end result comes out at 45.33mm.
I have tried several versions from 232b to 236c and they all do the same.
My system runs Windows XP but I can't see that having a bearing on it.
Regards
Tony.

Hi Tony,

The dialog rounds the Way setting and track centres to the nearest prototype inch:

To set and use some other centres, do not click the continue button. Instead, click the keep button to exit the dialog.

Sorry if this isn't clear or it is clunky working, I will have a look at making it more obvious.

cheers,

Martin.

Ah, right.
The obvious button is not the one to click.
I just couldn't figure out what was going on.
It has been quite some time since I last used that option, certainly before the menu change.
Now I know its OK.
Sorry to drag you away from your printed trackwork.
Thanks.
Tony.

Hi Tony,

No problem. I've been thinking about the above dialog, and it is obviously in need of improvement. I will do something about it. :)

Thanks for drawing it to my attention.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Tony,

I have now changed the wording on the track spacing dialog:

index.php

There is no actual change to any of the functions, just a bit more explanation of the dialog.

Will be in the next program update. Thanks again for reporting the issue.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin.
Further to the above, I have discovered an anomaly, which I am sure was not there before these changes where made.
When altering the track centers using the mouse, the track center numbers in the information window alter as the mouse is moved, but if I enter the figures manually and enter them they don't, only changing when the template is saved to the storage box. I am using the latest version of Templot.
Regards
Tony.

Hi Tony,

Many thanks for reporting this. There is a re-draw call missing. Normally changing the spacing setting doesn't cause any visible change until you do something to use it, such as making double-track. But a re-draw is needed to update the info panel. It's also needed if the peg happens to be on CTRL-5 or on the adjacent centre-lines. I will get it fixed in the next program update.

If Templot fails to update the screen at any time, you can force a re-draw by pressing F12, or by zooming in and out on the mouse wheel:

cheers,

Martin.
