Problems with latest update.

Quick reply >
Martin,

Have just updated to the latest version and I can't get the program to run. I normally run with Templot on Onedrive and once I have installed the new version in Onedrive and run the program I get this message :-

Templot-01.jpg

I know that I have no spaces in the path and you can see from the message that there are none. :)

I then start the program and it hangs on this screen :-

Templot-02.jpg

I've had a couple of goes at re-installing but with the same result.

Windows 10 64 bit.

HI Jim,
There is a space...

"Dell<space>Precision"

WHere <space> means a space character.

You could try renaming the folder /Dell Precision/ as /Dell_Precision/ as long as you dont have other things referencing it.

Or Copy the folder /Dell Precision/ to a new folder called /Dell_Precision/ and try Templot from there.

Hi Jim,

I can see a space between Dell and Precision.

Why do you want to install Templot in OneDrive (whatever that is)?

cheers,

Martin.

For exactly the same reason I do, I guess. Online backup and mirroring and the ability to run Templot and access files on different devices.
@Paul Boyd

Thanks Paul. You could install it on a USB stick and plug it into any Windows computer anywhere. No need to create an account with a cloud provider or any internet connection issues.

Templot5 doesn't even call home, so you might go straight to templot_5.exe if you wished. :)

cheers,

Martin.

I could do that for Templot but that’s very clunky! I have around 1Tb of data on the cloud, mostly photos, so sticking Templot there as well doesn’t really add much!

If I want to use Templot on my work PC I will then download Templot from OneDrive onto a USB stick temporarily, thereby keeping within the Ts & Cs!

Besides, I wouldn’t trust a USB stick for long! Maybe because experience has made me paranoid, but I also have three external hard drives to backup everything, spread across two sites.

The slight mystery about Jim’s post is that no version of Templot would have run in that location, not just the latest version.

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,

The Ts and Cs appear to be heading for the buffers now that Templot is open source, so I won't be sending the boys round. :)

The slight mystery about Jim’s post is that no version of Templot would have run in that location, not just the latest version.

It is actually running, but can't load the files. That might be related to the change in BOX file format for Templot5. It might be that Templot5 is even more fussy abut spaces than Templot2.

The answer is very simple -- don't use spaces in file/folder names. I don't use them anywhere on my computer and never have done -- at one time it was the golden rule on any computer file system.

cheers,

Martin.

Martin,

I had a blind spot for the User Name. :) I got this laptop second hand a couple of years ago and that's the user name that was on it and I've never changed it. I've been accessing Templot on OneDrive in that location on the laptop throughout that time and this is the first time I got the warning message and a failure to run. I'll change the user Name to get rid of the space.

And, as Paul says, it's very handy when I run three PCs in the house that I can run from the same installation of Templot on all three computers.

Hi Martin,

I think the Ts & Cs are never read anyway! Our IT support people might twitch though if they saw Templot on my work PC :)

I've always made sure that Templot is installed in a folder without spaces, but never paid much attention to folders within the BOX_FILES or SHAPE_FILES folders, where they mostly do have spaces. I've not yet had a problem doing that in 20+ years, although I've also not yet tried Templot5...

A former colleague, since retired, also had a thing about spaces. He used to use a . instead so our filing system is full of "Andrew's bloody dots" !!!

Cheers,
Paul

Now here's a funny. :)

I investigated changing the folder name in the Windows User Folder but that wasn't recommended since it would affect any other applications making use of the User folder.

I then went to the oldest of the three PCs upstairs and tried running Templot from its Onedrive folder there and got the same situation with the program hanging with the "Loading Templates" dialogue box showing - exactly the same as on the laptop with the space in the path name.

I then went to the third PC which is the newest desktop and tried running Templot with the same result - hanging with the "Loading Templates" dialogue box displaying. I didn't try to get out of the program right away but left it in the hung state. After about a minute or so, the dialog box cleared and the program worked normally. I closed and re-started it from the Onedrive folder, and it worked as expected. I then went and tried the other two PCs, and they both worked as expected, loading from the Onedrive folder - even with the space in the path name on the laptop.

One thing I didn't note on any of the machines was if there was any heavy disk activity while in the hung state which might have indicated that the PC was doing something like sorting a lot of directories. I've been using Templot for about twenty years and there are a lot of files in the Templot folder. In the case of the newest desktop, I might have left it long enough to complete whatever it was doing.

So all is well with my three PCs. :)

Hi Jim
Are you talking about the BOX-FILES folder?
How many files?
You could try creating sub-folders within the BOX-FILES folder and grouping your .box files into these Sub-folders.

Have you got any anti-virus s/w installed?
