  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Retaining modified generator settings

Hi
I had a go at using a modified version of my Templot plan to create its overhead line wiring pattern. To that end I went into the generator settings and removed everything except the rails. I then used the shapes function to insert portals and wiring so I can create etching artwork for each support. It all went swimmingly and at the end I saved the plan as a copy and the shapes as a separate file. When I reopened the file the next day, all the generator changes were gone and I once again had a full plan with timbers, centrelines, the lot.
Is there any way I can retain the modfied generator settings between sessions to retain the plan the way I had it to begin with without having to go through every template each time to remove the elements I don't need?

Hi Alan,

There is an option to save the generator settings in your program preferences, but I strongly advise that you don't do so. They are not intended for design work. The generator settings are there to control the program performance, and make temporary changes to the build lists for immediate output.

You didn't say how you are creating the artwork, but if exporting a DXF file you can remove what you don't want on the DXF dialog. Simply change the colour for the unwanted elements to none:

Alternatively you can make similar changes in your CAD program to remove unwanted layers from the imported DXF file.

Or if you are creating your artwork as an exported image file, or a PDF file, you can control what it contains using the output elements settings:

output_elements_5.png

The above settings are included in your program preferences if you save them.

without having to go through every template each time to remove the elements I don't need?

Or at the design stage, you can remove unwanted features in the design menus. You don't have to go through every template:

1. removes the timbering from the control template.

2. modifies the background templates to match. On all of them, or a selected group.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin
Thanks for that very comprehensive reply. It's a great help. My idea is to have the wiring diagram on the modified Templot plan so I can create cross sectional drawings of the supports from which I can transfer the various dimensions to create artwork in CorelDraw. I've attached one of them here.

Regards

Alan
