TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Rotated Shapes Bug?

Quick reply >
I have a P4 Track plan and onto this I added a rectangular shape for the outline of a goods shed and engine shed.

These were the shifted / rotated into position onto the track plan using mouse action, where there appear in the correct orientation.

However, when output to a printed, either full size, or reduced, both of these shapes are printed without their orientation.

I have attached the box and shape files for reference

All the best

Hi Phil,

This isn't really a bug, just another of several unfinished loose ends which I have failed to fix before releasing updates. Sorry about that. I recently added the function to twist rectangle background shapes for use with the experimental 3D exports (timbering brick boundaries and slabs).

Thanks for reminding me about it -- I will get it fixed for the next update. There is a lot of experimental 3D stuff which still hasn't made it into the printed paper outputs. I must get on with it.

In the meantime there are a couple of ways of getting what you want:

1. export a 2-D DXF file, and then re-import it into your background shapes:

Click the omit all button, and then switch the background shapes back on, by selecting any colour for them (the actual colour will be ignored) and export a 2-D DXF file.

Then import the file into the background shapes:

2. if you want a neater result, use the sketchboard. You can use simple geometric items to represent buildings, or add a suitable full image. Tick the box top left to show items on trackpad:

Close the sketchboard, and this is the result:

On the output, tick the box to include sketchboard items:

Use pale colours, or you could be using a lot of ink. Or cockling the paper, spoiling the accuracy of the templates. You can change the opacity of each item on the sketchboard controls. You can make them very faint if only for reference.

Ask again if you need more info.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Phil,

This is now fixed in the next program update. Thanks for nudging me to get it done.

Your goods shed in your BGS3 file:

This twist rectangle shape function will be working in all output formats -- Print, PDF, images, metafiles, and on the sketchboard.

It will make the background shapes more useful for such structures and angled baseboards. I should have done it years ago when we changed to the BGS3 file format for the shapes.

Now back to plug track. :)

cheers,

Martin.
