TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

    For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

    The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

    Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Hi James,

Further to the query in the Zoom meeting last night. I couldn't remember about this (it's at least 10 years since I wrote this stuff), so I've done a bit of digging in the code.

The default colours on these buttons are hard-coded and can't be changed. The colours of added items can only be changed after they have been added.

I doubt it was my intention to leave them hard-coded, it was probably one of those temporary things which last forever. :)

I will do something about this. The easiest option is probably to right-click on the button and set the colour to be used for it each time. But changing the colour which actually shows on the button would be many hours work, so that's not likely to happen any time soon. A coloured marker alongside the button might be possible.

Many thanks for the chat about your impressive Bexhill West project. For anyone who hasn't seen it, James's excellent YouTube channel about his project is at:

https://www.youtube.com/@BexhillWest

I will include this link with the posted recording of the meeting when I do it.

cheers,

Martin.

@James Walters

Hi James,

That looks great! :)

If you are spending a lot of time working on the sketchboard, there is something I need to say.

I would suggest saving your work from time to time. (file menu on the sketchboard).

The reason is that the core graphics engine which drives the sketchboard was written by Nils Haeck in the Netherlands. I licensed the code from Nils for use in Templot (which is why the sketchboard is not available in the open-source version of Templot). The working of the graphics engine is brilliant, but at that time it was a work-in-progress by Nils and was still a bit flaky in places.

Sadly Nils suffered a brain injury in a horse-riding accident shortly afterwards, and was unable to continue with software development or provide support for his customers. As far as I know Templot is the only application left still running his Delphi graphics engine.

In the early days it tended to crash quite often, and Nils was unable to help. I spent many hours going through his code, making changes to bring it into line with the way I like to do things, and generally making it more robust. With the result that nowadays it very rarely crashes (I can't remember the last time it did), but I still feel a bit nervous if I have done a lot of design work on the sketchboard and not remembered to do a Save.

Just something to keep in mind.

cheers,

Martin.

@Phil O @James Walters

Hi Phil,

You asked about Brian's signal drawings for the sketchboard. They are all in the Archive here:

https://85a.uk/templot/archive/topics/gallery/index.php?b=1853&un=Brian Nicholls

The topic about them is at:

https://85a.uk/templot/archive/topics/topic_1224.php

I don't know why they have gone missing from the sketchboard image library folder, but I will get them put back. If you want to use them in the meantime, the long file name which needs to be used for them in the sketchboard library can be found in the attached TXT files in that topic. That allows them to be automatically scaled when added to the sketchboard.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Thanks, it was only whilst you were doing your demonstration of signals during the Zoom meeting that I remembered about Brian's signals.
