Hi James,
Further to the query in the Zoom meeting last night. I couldn't remember about this (it's at least 10 years since I wrote this stuff), so I've done a bit of digging in the code.
The default colours on these buttons are hard-coded and can't be changed. The colours of added items can only be changed after they have been added.
I doubt it was my intention to leave them hard-coded, it was probably one of those temporary things which last forever.
I will do something about this. The easiest option is probably to right-click on the button and set the colour to be used for it each time. But changing the colour which actually shows on the button would be many hours work, so that's not likely to happen any time soon. A coloured marker alongside the button might be possible.
