TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

When aligning a long template over a background map, it can be very useful to use the pad bunching function to see both ends of the template at the same time, at a good zoomed-in size:

But as you can see there is a bug:

This is working only for map tiles (and other picture shapes) which do not cross into the bunch zone. Which on most maps means a long template to bridge the middle tile(s):

It turns out that this bug has existed for 20 years, and has only now chosen New Years Day 2023 to make itself known. :(

So as "Tips of the day" go this is currently of rather limited use. Quite often templates will be shorter than the tiles, or the tiles need to be cropped or combined into a single picture shape. I will get it fixed for the next program update, because if working properly it would be very handy for use with the background maps.

It's also useful when extracting 3D timbering bricks, so I need to check it is working properly there too.

Happy New Year,

Martin.

I decided that I was being too feeble-brained in my last post, so I deleted it, had a boiled egg, and tried again. :)

The pad bunching now works reasonably well with picture shapes, with multiple tiles and after crop/combine to a single image:

There was really no point in trying to put a distorted image in the bunch zone, because no practical use can be made of it there.

This change will be in the next program update.

cheers,

Martin.
