TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Following a question which came up on the Gauge 0 Guild Zoom meeting yesterday, I have made a short bit of video showing how to put a diamond-crossing through a transition curve. See:

p.s. For best image quality, click HD > Original at the bottom-right of the video.

cheers,

Hello Martin
Sorry this is a little off topic, but only a little. If one is creating a diamond on a transition curve and is doing so manually, are there any 'rules' as to what K can go with a V? Or is it a case of just making sure the green square on the info panel doesn't turn red? By studying the real World and by a staggering coincidence this fits OS map- a V5,K6,V9 - is that something valid or... It looks right, but I haven't tried turning it into a single slip yet.

TIA
Derek

@Derek

Hi Derek,

There are no rules. You use whatever fits.

In Templot there is the rule that the K-crossing angle on both half-diamonds must match. That's purely Templot, the prototype doesn't design K-crossings in two halves.

But the radius in each half can differ if necessary.

The red warning lamp is YOUR setting for a radius warning indication, it's not any external rule, prototype or model. YOU set it to whatever you want it to be:

That setting is template-specific, meaning each template has its own warning level. Typically you would set yourself a smaller radius limit when designing the turnouts in the goods yard than when designing a running-line junction.

Or you might simply ignore it. Templot is a tool for your workshop. YOU use it to create whatever YOU want.

It's been a constant battle of wits to stop folks regarding it as some sort of repository of the one and only truth. :)

cheers,

Martin.
