As you know, the trackpad view can be dragged around with the mouse, in the same way as an internet map. It's called a "slippy" view.
If you do that using the left mouse button, you have to be careful to click on a blank area and avoid clicking on the templates or other features, which causes other things to happen. That can be difficult to avoid if you are zoomed-in to make fine adjustments.
However, if you drag the trackpad using the middle mouse button (i.e. pressing the mouse wheel down into the mouse), you can click anywhere you like on the trackpad without disturbing anything else. You can even drag the trackpad around while you have a mouse action in force -- which is handy if your adjustments are causing something to move out of view.
But while pressing the wheel button you need to be careful not to roll the wheel, because that cancels the dragging and performs a zoom action instead.
