Turnout to plain track

Hi

I have a question in relation to the railway practise when progressing from turnout to plain track to rail lengths. In my case I am using 44'6" track panel lengths.

Does the 44'6" length start from the rail joint at the end of the "V" leg or does it start from the midpoint between last Timber of turnout (T1)and first sleeper of plain track (S1) or is there another explanation? If the latter I would expect that a non stardard length of rail would be needed i.e. 44'6" plus L (see my attached diagram).

Hi Graham.
Since the length of the vee rails would be a company standard, the next length of rail would start from the rail joint. If the standard rail lengths at that time were 44' 6", then I would not expect to find longer lengths than this anywhere as these would not be available, including in the turnout. It is however quite possible that shorter lengths than this may be used for the next length of plain track especially where a replacement turnout with a different geometry is being inserted into existing trackwork and the sleepering adjusted to suit.

I am now working on a 44'6" length from the "V" joint as you suggest. I have spaced the timbers as per prototype and adjusted the first sleepers of plain track to fit in the gaps between the timbers until there is no interference. Having done this the centre to centre distances of sleepers are greater than the standard 30.5". I am not sure if sleeper distances greater than this are allowable or whether I should try and squeeze in an extra sleeper. Do you know?

Hi Graham.
As a general rule of thumb, if the sleeper spacings that would result are greater than the nominal standard maximum, then extra sleepers were added and the rest re-spaced. The bonus sleeper facility in Templot allows you to do this, but odds on it will be at the opposite end of the track section to where you want it.

Hi Graham,

Use the along mouse action to move the new bonus timber along the template.

Or if it is more convenient, you can add the bonus timber to an adjacent template, and throw it across to to the template where it is needed.

The mouse actions in the shove timbers function let you move a timber to anywhere in the track plan. But it's a good idea to leave all timber shoving until the track plan is finalised (unless you are creating library templates).

Thanks for replies.
In my plain track template at the moment I have 3 sleepers A1 to A3. Which are "under the timbers" from the "V" leg rail joint forward (see screen shots). So it would be an easy matter of using the A3 sleeper and to adjust the other sleepers on plain track so that none are more than 30.5" C to C. I am at present trying to find out what would have been the maximum C to C that would have been acceptable on plain track. A6 to A7 is 33.5" and A7 to A8 is 32.5"
I have had a look at the suggested links are they have proved to be enlightening. I am obviously not alone in my ignorance of Railway practice in regard to timbering.
