Welcome to this new home for Templot Club. :)

For an explanation of why we are here, see: https://85a.co.uk/forum/view_topic.php?id=3837&forum_id=2

I have lots of plans!

Unfortunately I'm as new here as everyone else, so finding out exactly how to do things is taking time. Please bear with me if the pages go a bit awry at times.

Simply copying the entire 13-years-worth of the old site across here isn't very practical technically, and wouldn't be sensible anyway because it contains a lot of Templot stuff which is now out-of-date, and a lot of transient day-to-day stuff which is pointless keeping.

What I'm planning to do is to create a searchable static archive from the old site, which will be easy to find from here. I've barely started on that yet, so exactly how it will work is still undecided. But for the time being it is all still accessible on the old site at https://85a.co.uk/forum

Hi Martin,

How many and what types of attachments are allowed per post?

Can we now add both a .box and its accompanying .bgs file to the same post?

Edit: just tried it. .box, .bgs3 and .sk9 are allowed. Attempting to load a project from 2017 didn't work as they're still in the older file formats

Hi David,

Current settings are:

Max number of attachments per post = 10

Max file size of any one attachment = 15MB

Allowed file types:

zip
txt
pdf
png
jpg
jpeg
jpe
gif
webp
bmp
box
mecbox
bgs3
sk9
bgs
sk81
dxf

I will add more as needed. Unfortunately, unlike on UltraBB, they are not listed on the actual posting page. I will try to fix that -- so many little details like that still to fix. :(

There are so many small details which over the years I got working on the old UltraBB forum, but I now have to fix all over again.

For example, in the email notifications, if you view your email as plain text or simplified HTML, the quoted text is not indicated and separated from the actual reply, making it difficult to read. I will get that fixed in due course.

Hi Martin,

When attempting to upload a file the user is presented with 2 choices in a dropdown: "Custom Files" or "All Files"
templotclubuploads-1.png

Hovering over "Custom Files" shows the whole list of allowed types (if your screen is wide enough). This list also acts as a filter when browsing for files so you can't even find the non-allowed types.
templotclubuploads-2.png

I used "All Files" to upload a non-allowed filetype and then got told that it wasn't allowed :
templotclubuploads-3.png
(No, I do not want .ipt files added to the list - just using the file as an example).

Hope this helps as I know from experience that what a typical user can see and do is often significantly different from an Administrator's view.

Thanks David.

I'm logged in as "test_user" in a different browser, so that I can see the normal view. But there's still a lot to take in.

I see that XF is using the standard Windows file dialog to filter the file types. That's not entirely clear to a new user, it would be helpful to see a list before clicking the Attach files button. But it can wait for now. :)

cheers,

Martin.

Just bumping this topic. More stuff here later today.

I'm a bit puzzled why the What's new section has gone blank. Perhaps I need to change the definition of "new" somewhere.

Hi Trevor,

I don't know, but it's about time the rest of the staff showed up to lend a hand!

I have been trying to remove that banner, so far without joy. :(

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin,
Can you tell me how I can make certain I get an email notification about new posts in any forum (like the old one :))
I thought I had set all forums to watched but I've only had 1 email notification (PDF files for printing) since the changeover.
I also seem to have got watched forums and watched threads mixed up.
Many thanks
Charles

Hi Charles,

You can see what you are watching, from the presence of the bell icon in the lists:

index.php

For setting up email, see:

https://85a.co.uk/forum/view_topic.php?id=3839&forum_id=1&jump_to=31676#p31676

Also make sure that emails are not going into your spam bins. Emails from here are from "Templot Club" -- you may want to add that to your white list.

Ask again if still no joy. Did you receive an email for this reply?

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin,
I am receiving emails when everybody else posts either a new thread or replies to an existing one ( on the forums I am watching ). When I start a new thread I get an email too but I don't get one when I post to a thread. This isn't an issue but is that what should happen ?

I get an email when a Templot thread is started by somebody else but for some reason Gmail ( set up in it'sThread mode so it groups emails from the same address ) puts the notification of replies to that thread as if they were from a different email address even though they aren't. I am guessing that it checks not just the email add that a message if from but also the subject line.

I whitelisted Templot's email address in Gmail as some of the early emails were ending up in Spam, but maybe I need to do it for different Templot email subject lines rather than just the email address.

The Southern coach green bit is the only question for you. The rest is just me waffling on........

Rob

Hi Rob,

Unlike the old UltraBB board, most forum software does not send you an email notification of your own activity.

Which seems logical, but is actually very irritating -- it means you can't create your own email archive of a complete thread if your own contributions to it are missing.

If you are receiving email notifications for starting a new thread you are doing better than me. :(

Bear in mind that I have been in and messed with the XF code to remove the requirement to visit the board between emails. In the process I may have changed the logic on this -- it's a complex chunk of code and ideally needed more extensive testing.

Sorry I know nothing about Gmail or it's threading or spam functions. I noticed that it was with a Gmail address that Phil had problems registering.

cheers,

Martin.

P.S. Inserting an image is much better on the new forum than the old one.

You are the second one to say that.

I find it significantly worse. For example unless I'm missing something there is no easy way to include one of your previous images in a new post. It's necessary to open the Media or go to the previous post (in a new tab), then right-click on the image to get the URL, and then return to the first tab and use BBCode img tags to insert it. It's 10 times easier just to upload it again. Which wastes disk space on the server, and clutters the Media section with duplicate images.

But life is always a trade-off. I dare say we shall survive. When we have been going a bit longer I might have a few expeditions into the XF files (there are over 5,000 of them) and see if I can improve the working (or wreck it).

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin,
I've solved the problem.
All the emails were going to my spam bin.
All seems to be working OK now.
Many thanks

Hi Martin

I've had a quick look but haven't so far seen if it's possible to continue previous threads other than by re-creating it here, and jumping to and from the old site to refer to what was previously written - is that right?

Hi Julian,

No, you can't continue previous threads directly. You need to start a fresh one, and include a link to the old one.

I'm in the process of creating a searchable archive of previous topics from the old forum -- there will be a mechanism to add a continuation link to them to a new thread on here. However, all that is a lot of work (over 3,600 topics) and I'm still in the middle of it. Click Archive at the top of this page to see how far I have got. :)

At present you can add to your existing topics on the old forum, but note that anything new added there now will NOT be included in the archive, so there is not much point in adding it. Likewise any edits to the existing posts will not be included. In the fullness of time the old forum will disappear into thin air.

cheers,

Martin.

I have now fixed this. Quoted text in emails now appears between |== and ==| delimiters.

As you should be seeing if you are reading this in an email client in plain text or simplified HTML.

One more item off the list. It's a long list. :(

Martin.

I’m not sure what the iOS Mail client uses to display emails, but from my perspective nothing has changed, but nor does it need to!
