TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

Apologies for the obscure title but I wondered if anyone knew what the concrete thing (circled in red below) with a metal central pin is? It’s at the preserved Ropley and there are lots of them, placed about 15-20ft apart between the rails. When looking back at pre-preservation photos, they also exist then so am planning to include them on my model but am keen to know what exactly they are and from what date would they have been there before I shove them in?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi James,

My guess is that they are platform-spacing "monuments". Fixed into the trackbed below the ballast at the required distance from the platform edge to the track centre-line. When the track is renewed, the rails are positioned relative to the monuments to ensure the correct level and running clearance from the platform. I suspect it is many years since they were last used, nowadays there are digital aids to track alignment.

cheers,

Martin.

Brilliant - thanks Martin, that makes complete sense as they are only alongside the platforms. I've got them first on photos from 1940s so guess that's roughly when they were installed.
