TEMPLOT 3D PLUG TRACK - To get up to speed with this experimental project click here.   To watch an introductory video click here.   See the User Guide at Bexhill West.

  • The Plug Track functions are experimental and still being developed. Some of the earlier pages of this topic are now out-of-date.

For an updated overview of this project see this topic.   For some practical modelling aspects of using Plug Track see Building 3D Track.

The assumption is that you have your own machines on which to experiment, or helpful friends with machines. Please do not send Templot files to commercial laser cutting or 3D printing firms while this project is still experimental, because the results are unpredictable and possibly wasteful.

Some pages of this and other topics include contributions from members who are creating and posting their own CAD designs for 3D printing and laser-cutting. Do not confuse them with Templot's own exported CAD files. All files derived from Templot are © Martin Wynne.

@Lancastrian

Templot Club member Ian Allen will be presenting a Gauge O Guild online Zoom meeting on 26th April with help for Templot beginners.

It's open to non-members of the Guild to take part and ask questions if you buy a ticket in advance (£2) from:

https://www.gaugeoguild.com/onlinesales/aneveningwith.aspx

Here are the details from the Guild web site:

An Evening With...

Ian Allen is a member of the SR7mm Group and has built all the points and crossings for the expansion of their railway, as well as being commissioned to build track formations for others. A long-time user of Templot, he has designed a number of layouts and also worked on projects for himself, just for fun. Keen to promote prototypical track, he believes that this part of model railways is often overlooked.
Join Ian where he will take you through an overview of Templot and how it can be used to design your layouts, as well as answer any questions and help if you have any problems regarding building track.
The event is live via Zoom on 26th April 2022 at 20:00 BST.
You must register for this event as places are limited. The event is FREE to members or £2:00 for non-members.

It will be available on YouTube afterwards, but obviously then too late to take part and ask questions.

Here is part of a previous session with Ian talking about Templot:

@Lancastrian

Hi Ian,

For your presentation tomorrow (Tuesday), have you had a play with this recent new function for beginners:

index.php

Here is a bit of scruff video showing this function in use:

https://flashbackconnect.com/Default.aspx?id=MpJjo2qAne0bTEXB6MeXPw2

I've since realised how useful it is when aligning templates over tracks on a background map. Draw a line along the track on the map and it becomes a template immediately.

For curved track, draw a chord across the arc (i.e. each end of the straight line is on the the track), and then use The CTRL+F10 swell mouse action to adjust it onto the curve:

For transition curves, the usual method is to add a short dummy template at each end, as above, and then use the make transition link function to join them.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for you help and input this evening. We have already had a number of comments thanking us, with one person saying he didn't think he'd get a lot out of it, but was blown away by what he learnt !

Kind Regards,

Ian

Thanks Ian. I was trying not to tread on your toes. It's very interesting to watch how others think about Templot and react to it.

If anyone wants to watch other Templot demos, with my commentary, please send them this link:

It's high time I did another one. :)

cheers,

Martin.

Someone asked about narrow-gauge. No narrow-gauge pre-sets are listed in the gauge list, but there is an option to load ready made sample library templates.

At the time I couldn't remember where it was on the menu. It is towards the bottom at the top of the gauge menu.

At present only 009 templates are listed there, so not relevant to 7mm scale. I will get some 7mm n.g. listed there too.

In the meantime, you can find some 7mm n.g. templates for 0n16.5 , 0n14 , 0n30 , available for download at:

https://85a.uk/templot/archive/topics/topic_28.php

n.b. 0n30 are USA 0 scale 1/4"/ft, 16.5mm gauge.

cheers,

Martin.

I have updated the above, in Templot version 234a now available. The sample templates are now at the top of the gauge menu and now include 0n16.5 templates for 16.5mm narrow-gauge in 7mm/ft scale:

I will extend this functionality in future updates with some standard-gauge and maybe mixed-gauge samples.

It doesn't do anything which can't be done by loading BOX files from anywhere else, but is a quick way for beginners to find them, and set the gauge/scale at the same time. And to start using library templates.
