... topic: 849 printed bisect of frog angle posted: 29 May 2009 20:03 from: jeckardt I am finally to the point of actually using a Templot template to build my first two custom turnouts. As I am sitting here filing the v-rail angles and trying to get the rails to fit together properly, I realize that it would be very helpful to have a "construction line" bisecting the the frog, extending maybe 2-3 centimeters on either side of the v-rail. Sure, I can (and did) hand draw this onto each of the printed templates, but it would be nice to have an option to have Templot do that for me accurately. Joe posted: 29 May 2009 21:00 from: Nigel Brown Joe There are various approaches to producing the V. I think what you're doing is filing both rails at half the angle so that placed side by side they produce the required V? If so there are alternative, rather easier and possibly more accurate methods. E.g. File one rail ...

... is that there should be a minimum 2" flangeway clearance all along an open switch rail to ensure that wheel backs cannot make contact with it (which can damage stretcher bars and detectors). For 2.75" rail width this means a minimum offset of 4.75" at the rail end. However, this is still not sufficient flangeway for 00, EM, 0-MF, etc. If modellers using those gauges wish to use loose heels they will need to move the actual heel position further along the closure rail. A custom switch can be derived from the straight switches showing the rail joint in a different position, or the template can simply be marked up as required during construction. If the reason for using straight switches is simply to save space in the track plan design, it is easier to adopt the straight switch geometry for the turnout, but actually to build them as flexible switches in the usual way. The heel joint can be represented with dummy fishplates attached to the flexing rail. Templot also includes a range of non-prototypical short ...

The whole idea in Templot is that you set up your templates to match the prototype, which in this case varies a lot for slip designs. How can I obtain these 4mm. Many thanks. Hi Gustavius, Welcome to Templot Club. Creating templates to match existing commercial trackwork can be hard work. Templot is based on prototype pointwork, and most commercial pointwork is not. You can customize the templates to match your existing timber spacings, see: http://templot.com/companion/index.html?timber_spacings_overview.htm Note that timber spacings are measured centre-to-centre, not the gaps between them. p.s. in UK track, the bearers under turnouts are called "crossing timbers" or simply "timbers". The bearers under plain track are called "sleepers". Timbers are usually wider and deeper (12in x 6in) than sleepers (10in x 5in). I have edited this topic title to ...

... switchblade toe without joggling the stock rail? danny_blade_table.gif Hi Danny, I'm sorry to say these "thick-tip" switches are not (yet) supported in Templot. They are the usual arrangement for USA-style AREA switches (where the blade tip thickness is normally 1/8 ", corresponding to your 3mm). They are on my "to do" list, but as they are not used in the UK they have not had priority. Sorry. For a model construction template, you can simply create a custom switch with a "virtual toe" at the vertex, and extend the switch rail lengths by the vertex distance. Then during construction ignore the bit of blade between the vertex and the actual blade tips. Some calculations will be needed to get the timbers correctly located. For your 1:1 drawings, you can represent them using partial templates. Proceed as above, then split out the "crossing rails" onto a separate template (do> omit rails and joint marks menu item). Then blank it up to ...

... , Welcome to Templot Club. The reason there are no narrow-gauge pre-sets available in Templot is that there are just too many of them to list, and it's a minefield trying to establish the actual track standards used, especially for the European ones. For 3.5mm/ft scale on 12mm gauge I suggest using a 1.0mm flangeway in the absence of any definitive information. Start with standard H0 gauge. Then on the gauge/scale dialog (gauge> other gauges... menu item) click the set custom:> a button at the top left. Change the gauge and flangeway settings as required. It is written in a very different style of coding from my own, and I do find it difficult to follow in places. Unfortunately shortly after I purchased it and started work on it for Templot, Nils suffered a serious brain injury in an accident. This meant that he was in no position to support his customers, and is still not fully recovered. So where problems have arisen it was necessary to make my own modifications without any help or advice from Nils. I did wonder whether to abandon it and create something much more basic of my own, but having spent a good sum of money on it I was reluctant to write it off. Which is a round about way of saying that I'm aware the sketchboard function may not be as robust as other parts of Templot, and may need further work. I did test it ...

Then adjust the V-crossing angle (F9 mouse action) until you hit the desired resultant turnout radius (60" is 1524mm as shown).
