With the introduction of even heavier rail section and sleepers this practice has been virtually discontinued as the mass of the structure stops linear movement and the rail expands sideways! (ie. thickens, not moves), to further assist, extra ballast is piled on the sleeper ends giving the familiar mound down each side of the modern track. You can see it is not complete; at this GW station few trains stopped on the main line tracks, but the relief was fairly busy with trains to and from Paddington, (24 miles) and Reading (~ 12 miles), both passenger and goods, many of which stopped. The goods yard had its own shunting loco stabled at Reading, which was kept busy and will hopefully provide some challenges in operation. I have not paid any attention to sleepering yet. It looks right but I am sure there must be better ways in many areas. I had a play with that bit of track- it showed 12.6 inches because that was the radius! I have changed the yard point to a shorter switch and a curviform crossing- it makes a big difference! You will no doubt want to tweak the sidings and go through the rest of the geometry for similar opportunities- of which I think there might be quite a few! The present arrangements leave a lot to be desired, but twice now they have beaten my attempts to upgrade to something better. A few years ago they caused an entire Pug (0.81) to be abandoned at a late stage because the check rail coding fell apart in total confusion. This time I'm absolutely not going to touch the check rails until I have the next Pug finished and released. Unfortunately that means the present check rail arrangements will have to remain as they are for the time being. Ceeton is a fictional NER two track mainline with light railway junction/branch. Was a bit disapointed I have to drop the end on loading dock but that's life I guess. If you have a Template which has timbers but not rails, it cannot be selected by clicking on it nor by means of the group fence- this is an issue if you need to shift such Templates as part of a Group- they just get left behind. They also just appear within the Storage Box as a blank. This is something of a PITN when you have a fair few of them- any suggestions as to a workaraound? ... OS 2500 drawing shows the use of several diamonds to gain access from the branch platform to the yard. Does any one have any photographs showing the details of GWR diamonds from around the time? I have consulted David Smith's GWR track book and can see the likely dimensions and construction, but to me it all looks rather cramped. You will see that the acces crosses several other tracks and the layout is much more complex than I recall it when I was at the adjacent school in the '50s. Often we watched from a few hundred yards in the Reading direction but were more interested in the named locos on the up and down mains adjecent to the 3-strand fence, which was as close as we could get legally. The plan I am working on covers between the 2 mileposts either side of the station. Any advice or comments would be welcome. Unfortunately, when someone else came along who knew how it should be measured, no one told them how 1.25" was being measured (I.e. incorrectly!) so it all went to pot- model track standards of the era were somewhat accommodating, so no great hardship. I presume that at some point a few calculations were performed, and 7mm came out as the nearest whole number on the metric scale. (Metric being viewed as more scientific/engineering-y at the time.) The sensible and logical (and scientific/wnginerring!) approach is to define your scale ratio and set the gauge from that. After all, that's what we do for all of the other dimensions! ... other features, I have lots of feedback from everything I poked into, I just wrote feedback on the first things that came to mind for me as a new user since these things are what I spend alot of time with. As I progress into more technical trackwork I might be able to provide feedback on that as well. I did try out the scetchboard and so far it has worked fine for what I want to do, which is drawing simple shapes to present buildings etc. So except bugging out on me a few times it has worked fine. But it has also increased the amount of files that need to be loaded and settings that need to be set each time I start Templot. As for PDF exports I tried that as well, only problem is it turned out to be a 20 MB file. It looked good but I have not looked into it much, the initial thing I noticed was that there seemed to be no way for me to turn off the sleeper centerlines (wanted to do it to reduce filesize and clutter ...
