However when I want to make longer turnouts I presume I also need longer points. From what I can gather 16'6" points are ok up to about #10 turnout. After that 19' points are used. ... topic: 1236 Maximum Width of Timbers Used on the railways posted: 8 Sep 2010 17:15 from: Brian Nicholls Hi All, Can anyone please advise me as to what the maximum width of timbers were used on the real (prototype) railway? In particular related to the L& NWR or LMSR or MR track-work, any time between 1880- 1940. I know the standard sizes usually used are, 10" and 12" width timbers, but would like to know the max. ever used. The reason for my question is, that I have, in several places, two adjacent Vee's+ wing rails and the timbers do not quite line up and are awkwardly angled to each other. The solution would be to use a single, but much wider, timber at a nominal angle between the two Vee's, and the same for the wing rails. Now I could just put wider timbers in to finish the job, but I do not want to contravene prototypical standards. Best regards. Brian Nicholls. posted: ...

... I'm not really happy with them- they need to slew past three water butts, and one line can "tunnel" through some camellia foliage. The plan attached is from an overlay supplied by GMCRO, but the terms of use don't allow me to post it. Interestingly the tandems at the end of the platforms don't allow for large locomotives to run round (I've allowed space for a class 25), and the 3 lines are to standard rail centres. I've based my checkrails on a min of 8 chains, as 10 chains meant check rails everywhere- which looking at pictures of Manchester Central was pretty much the case (although pictures of lower numbered platforms are hard to come by, esp. in bullhead times.) I'm not overly happy with the timbering in the areas where the formation is complex, so any advice for these would be appreciated. I've also attached a picture of the layout. Any comments are more than welcome. PS: Does anyone have any drawings of hydraulic buffers (and associated works), similar to http: ...
