Dear all,

If you use Adobe Reader to display PDF files (nearly all computers now have a copy of the full Reader or a Reader plug-in for your browser), please note this.

There is a virus in circulation which exploits a critical flaw in Adobe Reader by means of infected PDF files. Adobe say they will be releasing a fix on 12th January, but in the meantime it is advisable to disable Javascript in Adobe Reader -- how to do that and more details at:

 http://www.adobe.com/support/security/advisories/apsa09-07.html

This is especially important for anyone with their own web site, because this method is being used to deliver the Gumblar virus -- which steals your FTP password and then accesses your web site and infects your web pages with malicious code. It would be a good idea to change your FTP password now if you haven't changed it recently.

So until Adobe Reader is updated, be very wary of unexpected PDF email attachments or PDF links in Google or on web pages.

An excellent alternative to Adobe Reader is the Foxit Reader, free from:

 http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/

although for all we know that has its own flaws, of course.

regards,

Martin.

I've just received an update to Adobe reader this morning. (version 9.3.0). I guess this might have fixed this issue, although it's not explicitly stated in the release notes.

Hi Richard,

Yes it does, see: http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb10-02.html

But you are a bit late -- my copy updated itself several days ago. :)

If anyone hasn't updated automatically, in Adobe Reader click Help > Check for Updates... menu item, and follow the instructions.

regards,

Martin.
