Hi all

Was just looking through the available scales and don't see On3 narrow gauge. Is anyone doing anything in this scale and if so, can I "borrow" a box file :)

Cheers

Hi Bruce,

Narrow-gauges aren't included in the pre-set list because there are just too many variations.

There are some 0n30 templates here:

There is a video and topic about creating those custom narrow-gauge templates here:

I'm not sure what you mean by 0n3 (another problem with narrow-gauge -- there are numerous systems of designation :? ). If you mean 3ft gauge, you should get quite good results simply by increasing the track gauge on the above templates.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin

You're not wrong on the US narrow gauge, I found a list on the web and there is On3, On3.5, On2, On 30, On18 ad infinitum!

I found out that On3 is in fact 3ft gauge American O scale so basing it on the On30 templates should work nicely. I'll double check with the NMRA specs for flangeways etc and have a go at it... :)

Cheers

Hi Martin

I currently have a layout started in the On30 templates but am not sure on the "increasing the track gauge" bit. I found out that On3 (3ft gauge) is the same as OO-NMRA as in .750" track gauge. But the video you linked shows using a gauge in the list to modify and am not sure how to do it with the On30 templates. Any assistance you could offer would be very much appreciated....

Cheers

Hi Bruce,

Start with the 0n30 templates.

Then increase the track gauge -- template > gauge and scale > modify current settings > modify track gauge ... menu item.

Set the track gauge to i0.75 or 19.05mm.

You will probably want to increase the base timber length to 6ft -- real > timbering > timbering data ... menu item.

Set the plain-sleeper length to 72 inches. Leave the other timbering settings as they are (unless you want to change them, of course).

regards,

Martin.

Help! I have been plugging away at converting the On30 samples to On3 with some success. However, the turnouts are being a pain.

What I am trying to do is use 24" tie spacing with 6' x 7" x 5" ties throughout. I have attempted to create a custom turnout from the On30 #5 but the tie spacing will not play ball and every time I try the ties under the frog area do not change. Could someone possibly help, I am going round the bend!

Hi Bruce

There is an option to adjust the timber spacing for turnouts - open the real menu and select timbering and then timbering data.

Try varying the setting for: fill timber spacing

I found this necessary when creating templates for 16mm scale 32mm gauge.

You will also probably need to shove some timbers to get the appearance satisfactory.

Thanks Bill

I'll look into that once I have sorted another self induced problem :)

Hello Bruce,

Glad to hear of your On3 interest.  I'm modelling Colorado narrow guage 3ft, specifically the Rio Grande Southern.

On3 should not be confused with On30 which is actually 30" guage O scale.

On3 is a fine scale of 1:48 ratio  ( 1/4 " per foot )  19.05 mm guage. The NMRA publishes a list of track / wheel / and clearances for On3  as it does for most known USA scales/guages. The Rio Grande Southern constructed its 147 miles of track using the following standards

1 - Rail FB weight varied 44lb through to 55lb per yard

2 - Ties ( sleepers )  6'-6" x 7" x 5"  at 22" centers, although excursions beyound that became commonplace.

3 - Switches   Stub switches were usual at time of construstion 1890's  ( Approach rail at point end slewed between routes ) As the railroad staggered into the 1950 s most stubs had been replaced with conventional switch points

I'm very new to Templot but find the possibilities quite exciting.   Ive got it producing three ways and plainline track.  Happy to share once I master sending files -  John Pearson undefinedundefined

Hi John

Thanks for the info, very helpful! The layout is now designed to the point where Templot comes into play. It is based in the Appalachian region around Manns Creek/Sewell.

I would love to see/utilise anything you have come up with, On3 was a little trickier in Templot than I first thought.

Could we maybe do an email exchange?

Cheers

Hi Bruce,

Happy to help you with On3, if I can, there's a great deal of 3ft  info on my bookshelves. Unfortunately I'm not a  Templot grand master more the fumbling beginner. If we were laying real track I'd have hit your thumb by now !

I found it quite easy to set up track specification to suit 3ft including timbering sizes / spacings etc. plus track standards, e.g.  min radius plain line and switches based on type of locos and stock.   Plugging that in made quite a difference.  Templates look as I expected.

See the club correspondence on flat bottom rail width. Martin Wynne has suggested increasing rail width to show outer base and inner head flange face. Seems like a good idea for creating point building templates but I've not tried it yet.

I will publish my layout standards if you wish plus a few examples, all based on Colorado main line narrow gauge.  Will your layout in the Appallacians be of logging style ?

Hi John

First up let me say I am in a similar boat to you, I am definitely not one of the blessed in the Templot world and fumble my way through the working of the app. My main use of Templot is more to get the track to flow as if it is negotiating scenery vs exact duplicates of the track in a particular area. Having said that though, I do like it to look as close as possible to what will will be laid on the roadbed.

My first attempt at On3 was to use the OO specs as a base to give me the scale/gauge but I struggled to get any kind of exact spacing for ties and/or turnouts. While this works in guiding the placement of track and, say, cutting of roadbed it does not facilitate the placement of ties prior to laying of rail - something which I would like to get better at. When I fire up my Windows XP virtual machine I will attach the box file I am using so you can compare/look at what I have done.

The layout will be a freelance-ish representation of the Manns Creek Railway coal hauler with some of the towns included, the main structures around the RR will be represented.

I'll fire up XP a little later so I can get started at which time I attach the box file....

Cheers

Hi John

Haven't heard from you lately so I thought I would show you what I have done in On3. Not much in this box file but it is at least the correct gauge. I would be very interested in seeing what you have done with On3 as I am currently creating the final of the layout in question.

Anyway, any comments on my version would be welcome....

Cheers

Whoops! I see I have already attached the box file further up this thread. Can't remember if I changed anything inbetween the uploading but if it causes problems I'll delete it from my post.
