Gentlemen: My friend is building a version of Hemyock in OO and I am doing the same in S7. We have a question about the ballast which I hope someone here can answer. Looking at several different photos it would appear the main running line up to the platform is coarser perhaps crushed stone while the rest of the tracks look like a finer material that appears to our North American eyes to be like cinder. Does anyone know what materials may have been used? TIA Bruce Wilson Barrie, Ontario, Canada |

Hi BruceGentlemen:The G W used both stone ballast and ash, usually ash was confined to sidings etc. whereas ballast was used for running lines. HTH Cheers Phil |

Most main line ballast was about 2" stone and usually HO/OO ballast looks better in 7mm. The colour would vary depending on the railway company and the area. eg limestone or granite or wherever the company concerned sourced it's ballast. I'm not sure about the GWR and would let other more knowledgeable modellers give you that info. However in station areas it would be discoloured with brake dust, rust from the rails and chairs and discharges from locos and on train toilets. Various shades of brown. Cheers Jamie |
