I am struggling a bit with Templot Shape-Files saving. My problem seems to be when I have a scanned track plan on the work top and at the end of the session when I want to Save work. When I go to the Control/Save all images it comes up with the Shape-Files save box and shows all the bgs files against a TEMPLOT logo. The list comprises all of the example files but none of my own, so I cannot save the current track plan. A message comes up saying it cannot find the file. I have tried to re-scan the track plan again following your tutorial but all I seem to get are saved scans in Shape-Files but under a different file name. If I navigate to the Shape-files and look at the list I can see the new track plan scans but they have the Microsoft Office Picture Manger logo next to each file. If I then go to the top right hand menu bar and click Folder Type and come down the list to type and click two file types appear. One file is shown as BMP file and the other is TEMPLOT Shape-files. I can only conclude the I have not be able to put my scanned track plans into the shape-files as bgs images and consequently they are still BMP profile. The consequence of all this is I can do a lot of track building work but when I come to save it, then it is all lost and so until I know where I have gone wrong I shall stop work. I suspect I may be using the wrong Photo Image Software ( I am using Microsoft Office Picture Manager). I have tried using my Canon Zoom Browser Image Editor software to store the same scanned track plans but get the same result. This all sounds rather complicated so I hope you can make sense of it and where I am going wrong. Your advice and guidance would be much appreciated. Kind regards, David Emerton. |

Hi David Your scanned image is always held as a BMP file. Don't worry about the file having a Microsoft Office Picture Manager logo next to it; that's simply because you have set your system to use Microsoft Office Picture Manager as the default software for displaying such files. When you create a shape file in Templot and "import" the BMP file into it, what you're actually doing is sticking a reference to the BMP file within the shape file, rather than copying the BMP file itself into it. So when using a scanned plans as background you will always have/need both the BMP file itself and the bgs file referring to it. Once you created the shape representing your scanned plan within your current Templot session, you will need to save that shape as a .bgs file which you can then load in future sessions to display the plan. When you open the save dialogue to save the shape as a .bgs file, you will have to choose a name for the .bgs file; what I think you are doing is assuming that when you create the shape in Templot that will also create a .bgs file, and so you're expecting to see a file of the same name as the shape already there. It won't be. You can choose any name you like, other than existing ones; what I do is use the same basic name as the .bmp file, so if I'm using a file called say stroud.bmp for the scanned image, I'll choose the name stroud.bgs for the corresponding .bgs shape file, so that I know what goes with what. Not quite sure what you mean by losing all your work. Saving the shape as a .bgs file is something quite different from saving your templates in a box file. As well as saving the shape file for the scanned image you have just imported, you also need, separately, to save your templates in a box file using the dialogue for that. In future sessions, you will need to load both the box file and, assuming that you want your scanned image as a background, the bgs file for the scanned image (loading the bgs file will automatically load the corresponding bmp file holding your scanned image). However, normally at the end of the new session you will only need to save your templates, as a box file, not the bgs file as this time it already exists (assuming you want to use the same scanned image unaltered in all future sessions in this project). You only need to resave your .BGS file if you have altered the background shape in some way i.e. re-scaled it or rotated it. You are however warned and invited to save in those circumstances. Just to add to Nigel's comprehensive exlanation: You need three files: .box, .bgs and .bmp file. the box file is where your track is, the bmp is your picture and the bgs file tells TEMPLOT where to put your pictures and how big they are (note the plural). It also brings in other shapes that you have created such as lines for baseboard outlines. bgs files link to bmp files but box files are independant of the bgs files. Alan |
