Hi All,

Have just discovered, a few days ago, a great link to FREE downloads of old railway books.

The link is as follows:

            http://www.archive.org/details/railwaysignallin00wilsrich

This link will take you direct to the book “Railway Signalling:  Automatic;  First Edition  1922”, but from there you can search for other books as required.

Please note I am not sure exactly how many books are available, as I am still searching the site from time to time.

So far I have downloaded the following books:

---------------------------------------------------------------

"Notes on Permanent-Way Material, Platelaying, and Points & Crossings"  First Edition.  1890

By W, H. COLE

-----------------------------------------------

"Notes on Permanent-Way Material, Platelaying and Points & Crossings" with a few remarks on Signalling And Interlocking:  Second Edition.  1896

By W, H. COLE

-----------------------------------------------

Tables For Platelayers

compiled from the formulæ in the work on Switches and Crossings  First Edition  1871

By WILLIAM DONALDSON, MA., A.I.C.E.,

NOTE: Pages 6 and 24 are badly scanned and almost unreadable.

-----------------------------------------------

Power Railway Signalling:  No other info, but I suspect this book was published around 1904 !!!

By H. Raynar Wilson

-----------------------------------------------

Railroad Curve Tables:  First Edition  1906

By  R. S. Henderson.

-----------------------------------------------

Railway Signalling:  Automatic;  First Edition  1922

By Francis Raynar Wilson

-----------------------------------------------

Tables of Parabolic Curves:

For use of railway engineers and others:   First Edition  1898

By George T. Allen

-----------------------------------------------

All the above books are clearly marked as Out Of Copyright, so it’s OK to download without fear of the law knocking on your door.

One Tip on using the site, when you find the book your looking for, at the top left of the screen is a box with a list of download file types, if you are like me and prefer PDF file downloads, then be cautious of any in the list that say ‘Google’ downloads as these will shoot you off there web site and you may not be able to download the file, however, you will be able to read the file and print the book, one page at a time (a very slow process, not recommended).

To get round this, in the file download box towards the bottom and centred there is a page link called “http” in blue,

If you right click on this and open a new TAB you will then see a new list of file type downloads with no Google attachment, it’s downhill from there !

All the best.

Brian Nicholls.

Sorry forgot to add it even includes a lot of the maths, data (probably embedded into templot) and vast amounts of data for fishplate design, chairs etc.

Oh and its for British practice!

Well worth a read

Cheers again

Hi Phil,

Many thanks for the information, as you say another one for my list.

I hope that the post has been helpful to everyone, as I know sometimes it is difficult to get the right information when one needs it.

Also some books are difficult, if not impossible to get, and when you do find them they cost an arm and a leg to buy them.

All the best.

Brian,

Apologies for being a bit thick, but how do you gain access to the other books please? I have been to the above site and have downloaded the one featured but putting the "permanent way pocket book" into the search box came back with zero result.

I also tried entering the other books you quoted also without success.  What must I do to be saved!!!

Hi Dick,

First let me say, I cannot understand why typing in the title did not work.

However, what I suggest is that you only type in some of the key words.

Now if you, for example, type in the word ‘RAILWAY’, you will get a very large number of pages of railway books which you can trawl through and download whatever you find interesting, but you may get fedup after the 12th page like I did.

You could try typing ‘PERMANENT WAY, that might do the trick. (I have just tried this and it works OK I got a one page list of books of which that one wanted was fifth from the top in the list).

Or if you wanted info on points or crossings, then type POINTS and/or CROSSINGS, again you should get a list of the books on that topic.

One other point, sometimes in the search box when you have typed in your requirements, you may find there are other extra words in the box behind (after) your typed in words, so just check for this and delete the words that you don’t want.

Hope this helps, if you need further help, don’t hesitate.

Bye the way, nobodies ‘thick’ we all have our senior moments.:D

Best regards.

Brian Nicholls.
