My first effort.  The subject is Rhyl. the station throat in front of
No 1 box.  The "viewable" area is bounded on the west by the Vale Road
bridge and on the east by the carriage shed ( part of ). All else is
fiddle yard. Trains "vanish" behind the carriage shed. The shed was
in reality over 500ft long but only a fraction will poke out through
the backdrop.

This is an exercise in "reverse-engineering" to discover the sizes etc of turnouts.

 undefinedundefined
The plan is drawn in "S4-exact" but the model would be in EM.

The pointwork leading to the carriage shed is a challenge because the
point formations are jammed close on each other and offer little
scope for compression. And lots of timbering challenges.

Feel free to comment.

Hi Geoff.

That's an impressive plan, but there's one huge snag:-
The plan is drawn in "S4-exact" but the model would be in EM.
If you do a search on "changing gauge", you should find more info, but basically it means that the turnout lead lengths will change from the plan.  On a small layout, this may be manageable, but on one of this complexity I think you'll find that things start going adrift much sooner.  I hate to say it, but I think you need to re-do it all in EM gauge so that you don't start finding problems when you're cutting rail - it's much better to find problems on the computer screen first!

Incidentally, you forgot to include the bitmap with the BGS, so there's a big "empty picture" where bitmap should be!  The BGS doesn't include the bitmap - it just provides the detail of how it should be displayed.

Cheers

Paul,

Thank you. I accept your comments entirely.  I started in "exact" scale in order to discover details

of timbering, angles.  I've just tried to upload the .bmp file but hit the 6MB limit.  My bmp is 7.7MB

because it's a scan from an OS 1250-scale map.  I'll see what I can do.

Thanks.

Hi Geoff,

You should be able to zip it much smaller and upload the ZIP file. Alternatively you could save it from your graphics program in PNG format and upload it.

We can easily convert it back to BMP for Templot. :)

But please don't upload it if it is still in OS copyright, i.e. less than 50 years old.

Another option is to vectorise it to a DXF file ( http://www.wintopo.com -- free version) and import the DXF into the background shapes and the BGS file.

regards,

Martin.

For all the viewers not familiar with Rhyl I include one of my own photos taken in 1974 from the Vale Road bridge at the west side of the proposed layout.  The layout's normal viewing position would be where the buses/coaches are.  The track has been somewhat Beechinged since steam days but it is still possible to imagine the deleted tracks ( the up-slow line, the coal sidings, and anything connected with the carriage shed )
