Just wondered if templot can be used on a macbook ?? My windows pc is slowly but surely dying a bad death & the time has now come to get serious about templot & track planning. I don't really want to buy another windows based computer because they are too slow & i prefer the macbook if truth be told. I don't know much about computer's really so i wouldnt know if i could transfer the program over etc. My question is can it be done simply without huge work.

Simon,

The simple answer to your question is "No".

To run Templot on your MacBook would require a "Windows Virtual Machine" i.e. the Windows Operating System.  Your MacBook runs OS X - the Mac Operating System, compatibility will depend on which version of OS X you have on the MacBook.

You'd need a Windows install in a virtual machine environment, see:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/compatibility/
"It runs Windows, too.
Have a Windows application you need to use once in a while? No problem. Every new Mac lets you install Windows XP and Vista and run them at native speeds, using a built-in utility called Boot Camp.

Setup is simple and safe for your Mac files. After you’ve completed the installation, you can boot up your Mac using either Mac OS X or Windows. (That’s why it’s called Boot Camp.) Or if you want to run Windows and Mac applications at the same time — without rebooting — you can install Windows using VMware or Parallels software.*"
I run Templot on Parallels under OS X Snow Leopard and have no experience of Boot Camp.
The only minor problem I had was setting up the printer, otherwise it is simply a fresh install of Templot on your "new" Windows machine and you can then copy your existing Templot files across (you will need the original Windows installation disc to create this Virtual Machine).

If you want a simple life, leave Templot on the Windows machine and dedicate that machine to Templot to conserve processor capacity.  If you need portability then you'll need to consider what you're prepared to invest in creating the Windows Virtual Machine on your MacBook.

Regards,
Neil

Simon

How slow Windows is depends to a large extent on the hardware used to run it. Depending on how old your current machine is, a new one with a good amount of memory might be a lot quicker.

Just a thought

Simon,

Apart from a few initial gltches when setting up Templot on my new laptop running Windows 7 64-bit, I am more than happy with its performance. Getting a Macbook, getting used to the OS and setting up Templot on it may be much more troublesome. My son is a Mac devotee and tried to convince me the Mac was the way to go when I was looking at getting a laptop. But when adding up th extra cost of the Mac, plus needing a legit copy of a Windows OS (XP or 7) to run in Virtual Machine, and the learning curve to get used to the Mac, it was not worth it.

Regards,

David.
