I use Apple computers (vintage 2007 and 2008) into which Microsoft Entourage: Mac 2008 has been loaded.  Do I need anything more to run Templot software?

Thank you.

Ted.

Hi Ted,

As far as I know, to run Templot on a Mac you need either a full copy of Windows, or Linux plus the Wine emulator.

There are more-knowledgeable Mac users on here, so I'm sure you will get a full answer.

regards,

Martin.

Hi
There are two ways of running Templot on a Mac
1. Buy additional software eg. parallels. This allows you to run windows in a Mac environment
2. Create a partition or use a separate drive to run windows using 'boot camp', free from apple. Full instructions on how to set this up are available on the apple site

I use the second method and have had no problems, but remember you will need a copy of windows.

I use the first method and whilst I have no problems, Parallels is very slow.
If you are going to buy a copy of Windows and a copy of Parallels, it may be more effective to buy a simple laptop PC, and dedicate it to Templot.

My new employer (which happens to be me) requires the use of MS Windows for the purpose of industry specific software, and I have transferred Templot to this (I did ask myself if this was ok!) and I have to say that I don't want to go near Parallels again. I believe that using bootcamp would have been preferable, but that would require a re-boot of the Mac if I wanted to do anything else on the Mac. Well, that is my understanding.

I am using the latest Macbook with 10.6 OP. I split the hard drive as recommended to satisfy the downloading of Templot. I use Bootcamp with Window 7 and Templot appears to run perfectly, rather fast and smooth. However I get frustrated by the MAC keyboard where so many differences. For example some F's need the "fn" function keyed before they work and other short cuts do not work at all. So the main difference I have found is the keyboard, with missing keys compared to a windows keyboard. For example "end" key is missing and i have not yet found a way to totally hide all the Name pads.
However for my workshop and layout area in the big barn at my farm i have now purchased a simple 19" flat screen and can revert back to an old windows HP/Compaq with a small screen. So at least there at the nerve centre when build my track I have the solutions. I am sure there are other Mac users far more experienced than I am who have overcome some of the problems I still experience.
Quiet rightly as mentioned yes you have to reboot to change around the macbook. It only takes a couple minutes and one would not be normally doing two function where u needed mac and windows at the same time. I may be getting on a bit in years so I find I need all my attention when operating Templot. Not interested in anything else.

By the way if anybody has not visited Manila in last year there is a new rail link after the old run down loco and all the open air coaches have been replaced and most track repaired to allow at least 30 mph. there are no barriers as such at road crossing. It was amazing how the train stayed on the lines with up to 1.5 inches different in height at the rail joints.
They did float however as the ballast was limited probably stollen to help build somebody's house nearby.
Good luck to everybody especially Martin thanks for all your support.

Hi John,

All the keyboard shortcuts also have a menu item which you can click instead. To hide the name labels, it's pad > hide name labels menu item.

If the keyboard is significantly different, why not try the Windows On-Screen Keyboard? You can then click the relevant buttons on the screen instead of pressing keys. For say the F6 mouse action you just click the F6 button. For say the CTRL-5 peg position you click the ctrl button and then the 5 button:

on_screen_keyboard.pngon_screen_keyboard.png

To launch the on-screen keyboard, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > On-Screen Keyboard from the Windows taskbar. It stays on top and you can drag it around to keep it out of your way.

regards,

Martin.

I have previously mentioned that I was using Parallels on my Mac, but this was with Vista - I couldn't get hold of a copy of XP at the time. Not the cheapest option.

It ran dog slow, so I "upgraded" and it was even slower.

Recently my employer (me) acquired a Laptop with W7 on it as indicated above and so I moved Templot over to that and things were a lot better. However, having Templot on my work computer was proving to be more than a little distracting, so I re-investigated Mac options, and downloaded a trial version of Crossover (suggested by istvan.david in this thread) from CodeWeavers and installed it.

I have to say that this is the way to go: the only downside is the need to hold down the key when accessing the function keys, or you can use the on-screen keyboard. Upside? Seemless usage and good grief is it fast.

The url is: http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/

If you have a Mac, and want Templot, this is the way to go.
