I am a new user of Templot. I am trying to draw the templates for the entry to a new fiddle yard I am making.

I have drawn both the inner track (3' rad) and the outer track (5' rad) using make double track TS and adjusting the curving. I cannot find a way to work on the outer track without deleting the inner and vice a versa. Is there a way?

Working on the outer track I used free position for the turnout but when I came to change its position I could not delete the original position.

I have run the tutorial on this and the drop-downs are not on the version 0.74 I am using ( since I read it was suggested that this should be used to gain experience before updating).

Should I download the update now?

Thank you for  help.

Hi Stuart,

Using version 074b:

When you have finished adjusting the current template, click the control > store & background menu item. This stores the template specification in the storage box and draws the template on the pad background in different colours.

You can then continue to modify the current template and add it again to the background track plan in the same way.

Or if you wish to change an existing background template, click on it and then select delete to current on the menu which appears on the left. It will no longer be part of the track plan, so if you wish to keep it remember to do control > store & background again when you have finished adjusting it.

Working on the outer track I used free position for the turnout but when I came to change its position I could not delete the original position.
I'm sorry, you have lost me there. Can you say which buttons or keys you pressed and exactly what did or didn't happen?

If you want to follow the static "track plan" tutorial and most of the Templot Companion pages, stay with version 074b until you are familiar with Templot.

If you prefer to learn by watching the videos, upgrade to 091c now.

091c has many more features and is easier to use than 074b, so don't continue with 074b once you start using Templot in earnest.

You can have both versions on your computer and use whichever you prefer at any time. Install 074b, rename the program file TemplotZero.exe to say TemplotZero74b.exe (in the C:\TEMPLOT\ folder), and then install 091c.

I'm very sorry about this confusion. 074b and most of the Templot Companion pages are now 10 years old. As soon as I get the next version of Templot released I shall abolish most of the old web site and rewrite it for the new version.

regards,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

I am new to Templot and like to learn software from  text tutorials, help files and from watching video tutorials.

Can files created in the two versions be read interchangeably?

ie, can files created in 074b be used by and edited in 091c and vice versa.

regards

Hi Les,

Yes they can. All Templot .box files are forward and backward compatible right back to the first ever release of Templot.

However, "compatible" means only that they can be reloaded and saved without error.

There are several features introduced in the later versions which will either be ignored by the earlier versions, or drawn differently on the templates. The most significant and obvious difference is that half-diamond templates are not supported in 074b, and if reloaded in 074b from 091c files will be drawn as truncated turnouts. To create a half-diamond template in 074b you create a custom switch having the same deflection angle as the V-crossing. That's a lot of work, compared with just a couple of clicks in 091c to create a half-diamond.

So it's not a good idea to swap back and forth between versions if you are working on an actual finished track plan. You can always move forward to a later version, but going back to an earlier version may spoil your plan.

Templot will warn you if any of the templates in a reloaded file are from an earlier or later version of Templot.

You can see a full list of all the changes between the versions in these two pages:
