I am experimenting with Timber tracks & Templot with a small GWR P4 layout that has a Diamond crossing, B7 & B8 turnouts and a lot of plain track.

I have been able to match the plain track and created a custom setting for GWR 18 sleeper 44'6" track and that works well but i am struggling with the diamond and turnouts.

Any advice would be appreciated before i revert to the C&L templates

Hi Graham,

I don't have copies of the C&L P4 templates, so it's difficult for me to reply. Also I don't know if the Timber Tracks range is a direct match to C&L's own templates. Brian Lewis is a member of this forum so hopefully he will be able to give full details.

Generally to create an exact match to B7 and B8 prototype turnouts, in Templot you need to make these two changes to the default settings:

1. Change the type of V-crossing to generic ( template > V-crossing options... menu item).

2. Convert to using CLM angles ( do > convert RAM to CLM menu item).

Of course an exact match is possible only in the exact scale gauges, P4, S7, etc. Also there are minor differences between the various companies, and greater differences for the GWR.

If you are modelling the GWR to that degree of accuracy you should select from the GWR switches listed at template > switch options... menu item. And shove the V-crossing timbers to match the spacings shown in David Smith's book. The check rail lengths may also need some small adjustments. You should then be able to create Templot templates exactly matching the GWR prototype. Someone here may have already done all this and be willing to share their files.

However, as far as I know C&L templates are not available for the GWR and are based on the REA designs. I don't know if that also applies to the Timber Track bases.

If you could scan your timber track base alongside a 12" rule and post it here, we can help you customise Templot to an exact match.

regards,

Martin.

i have attached the B7 timbers, together with 12" rule. It's slightly longer than 12.

I have also stained the ply so it might be a bit difficult

anyway any help would be appreciated. If this works i can send the b8 and diamond or do it myself

Don't forget that GW timbering is usually equalised incremental, (ie square to the centre line of the turnout) thus making most C & L templates unusable as the timbering is to BR standards (and other pre-nationalisation companies  ie. square to the main road thru' the turnout. Also I believe that C&L turnout templates are straight turnouts.

Cheers Phil

Hi Graham,

Thanks for posting your scan. No significant customising was needed. :)

This is a P4 REA B-7 in Templot with a generic type of V-crossing and CLM angle (1:6.96 RAM):

It's a very close match, with only minor disagreements about some of the timber lengths. :thumb:

Bear in mind that this is an REA pattern turnout, not a GWR one.

regards,

Martin.
