I have figured out how to get a background turnout and the control template on the workspace and then move the control template into position. It appears that saving to the storage box only saves the current state of the control template and not the other templates showing on the background.

Does that mean every time there will be a saved entry for each of the final positions that were set by the control template? In other words can more than one object be stored as a control template?

I tried using the grouping function to put several templates on the background then wiping to control template. This seemed to work but then all of the existing stored templates were changed to the same template. Am I doing this correctly?

Hi Nicholas,

If a template is showing on the background it is already in the storage box.

See: http://www.templot.com/martweb/gs_whatis.htm

(Screenshot from 074b. The "current" template is called "the control template" in 091c.)

The control template (in black and brown) appears only on the workpad. There is only one control template because it represents the current output from the template generator. You can store a copy of it in the storage box to create either:

1. a background template showing on the workpad (in blue and green) -- this is shown in the storage box with red details, or

2. an unused template -- this does not show on the workpad but is included in saved data files, and shows in the storage box with blue details, or

3. a library template. This is similar to an unused template but cannot be copied onto the background from the storage box. It can only be copied to become the control template. It shows in the storage box with green details.

Tool functions containing the word "make" perform the first option for you. For example tools > make crossover stores the existing control template as a background template, and then creates a new control template to form the second turnout of the crossover.

If you are using Templot as a program to design a track plan, the track plan is built up as a collection of background templates, each one located in its position on the grid.

If you are using Templot to create a collection of individual construction templates, it is better to store them as unused or library templates. They can then all remain on the initial template datum location, and you can copy them one at a time from the storage box for printing as the control template.

This seemed to work but then all of the existing stored templates were changed to the same template. Am I doing this correctly?
That doesn't sound right. There is no function which does that. Can you explain again?

There are many ways to use Templot according to what you are trying to do. You can quickly snap together a track plan from standard templates in a few minutes, or spend days creating a single template matching a specific prototype.

Are you trying to match one or more individual templates exactly to the FastTrack jigs? To some commercial ready-made track? Are you trying to match one or more templates to a specific real prototype? Are you creating a track plan? To your design or a track plan copied from a book or magazine? To a track plan matching a real map? A track plan containing customized templates? A complex formation comprised of multiple partial templates? Templates for printing? Templates for export as DXF to CAD/CAM?

Templot can do all of these things, but the best way of using it may differ for each.

That's why it is difficult to give specific advice, and you may get conflicting replies from different users. Before saying what happened or seemed to happen, please explain clearly what you are trying to do.

regards,

Martin.
