Hello,

I thought that there was an option in Templot to make the end sleepers within each track panel of wider wood than the rest ( 12" v 10" ). I see it can be done by using the Shove Timbers part of the program but is it available anywhere else ?? I want to use 30' panels as per one of the standard options in 'Rail Lengths and Sleeper Spacings ' but want wider timbers at the end of each panel as well as closer spacing between them.

Need to do this otherwise can't use up the 10% mix of 12" sleepers that Brian Lewis supplies in his 10" timber tracks sleeper packs................

Thanks
Rob

Hi Rob

This is what I did, although there may be a quicker way:

Create a new templot plan, setting the scale (in my case P4)

real | plain track options | rail lengths and sleeper spacings...

Entered my custom data in a free slot (this allows the closer sleeper spacing at the rail joints)

Created a single length of plain straight track using this custom sleeper spacing

Used Shove Timbers to set the outer timbers to 12"

Save to background

main | store as library template
I then created my layout plan and using the storage box added my library above

To use the customized plain track, open the storeage box, navigate to the library template (it's name is in green) and copy to control template

Adjust as necessary and repeat for each template of plain  track, (or just apply the custom plain track settings from real | plain track options... | rail lengths and sleeper spacings... since Templot remembers the last custom settings used in the last custom settings slot

I hope the above is clear, it is actually much easier to do than it is to write about. Just for information, all my track in my plan was built from Library templates (including turnouts) all created from original LSWR data.

Cheers

Phil

Phil,

Many thanks for that. Going to bed now ( early for me ! ) as going to Nottingham show first thing in the morning. Will try your plan when I next fire up Templot.

Thanks again.

Hi Rob

In my research on timbers at the ends of track panels I found that this varied from company to company - talking pre-grouping that is.

One of the things I have discovered is that the timbers on either side of rail joins at the ends of turnouts should use the same width of timber. In some cases Templot gives 10" sleepers on one side of the join and 12" timbers (or bearers) on the turnout side of the join. Two timbers on each side of the join should be the same width.

By the way, I think that C+L should make it clear that their sleepering packs contain a mix of sizes as this is not stated on their web site and so a purchaser who expected the pack to contain a certain size only could be dissatisfied as a result.

Regards

Bill Campbell.

Hello Bill,

Thanks for your input. Yes, I have had C&L sleepers before and was not expecting there to be two sizes in a standard pack. Brian went to the trouble of cutting me some in 1.5mm thickness as I think the lower height makes it easier for the scenic work in some situations and these still came with the mix of end sleepers. I am fine with that though as I plan to use them. The 12" wide ones can always be used at the ends of turnouts if you are not using them at the ends of each length of track.

The track I am making is generic, not following any particular railway's characteristics, but I want it to look like it may have been accurate for somebody. It is only a small layout hence my choice of 30 foot lengths for the rail.

Regards
Rob
